Ivy League Ranking

Why is Penn definitely better than Brown?

Penn is outstanding and quite possibly the best or one of the best non-original Ivy schools. I'm not saying Brown is a bad school, it's not exemplary in any sense, but UPenn is well rounded in all its majors and even has excellent categories that it specializes in, for instance Wharton and business. Brown is not necessarily well rounded and none of the subjects in its curriculum are excellent or outstanding. That is why I think Brown, along with Cornell, are among the weakest in the Ivy. And looking at it objectively, you can look at any of the "Top College" lists, although not fairly accurate but it gives you a general sense of a school's standpoint among the rest.

Harvard/ Princeton/ Yale

Dartmouth/ Columbia/ Brown/ Penn

Cornell

FYI- Penn had been getting dramatically less selective than Dartmouth and Columbia. Not sure if anyone noticed.

Harvard

Yale

Princeton
(that's why its HYP and not HPY or PHY, imo)

Penn

Columbia

Brown

Dartmouth

Cornell

I still think Princeton's above Yale. It has the biggest focus on undergrad education.

Harvard/Princeton/Yale
UPENN/Columbia
Dartmouth
Brown/Cornell

LOLz nickel75 gotta love Cornell at the bottom: that was mean!

Best ivy league schools with the best, well rounded recruits from a top recruiters perspective...
-This should be the only metric that matters, who's recruiting at your school and what recruiters think. Its all perception, you can get a GREAT education from all Top 20 schools. However, if recruiters don't perceive that school to produce great students they wont come.

http://online.wsj.com/news/law

Harvard

Upenn

Yale

Princeton

Columbia

Cornell

Dartmouth

Brown

There are schools in between but i did not feel like typing it all up

Then Cornell has tons of specialty schools (even odd ones like Hotel Management and ILR), and it's GREAT with engineering (best in the Ivy League). Why isn't Cornell up there with Penn?

Yeah but if you look at Recruiters its more like:

Harvard, Princeton

Dartmouth, Yale

Penn, Columbia

Cornell, Brown

Lots of threads on this...

This is absurd. The reason why Columbia has a low acceptance rate is because a bunch of randos apply from NY/even out of state simply because it's an IVY and it's in New York City. Celebrities love to go there b/c it shows they're not brainless n Columbia just wants their money (and prestige, which inevitably leads to a very cyclic pattern, see above).

After you get into college, I think your perception of what a good "Ivy" and college is changes..because you learn that the prestige of each school is based mostly on their grad school ranking, so while Princeton (without a doubt #1 in undergrad edu) still holds strong, schools like Dartmouth get overlooked simply b/c they're not big on research.

IMO:

Princeton

Yale

Dartmouth

Harvard

Penn

Columbia

Brown

Cornell.

^^ So true. Columbia def gets a boost in the number of applicants because of its location. If i had to choose between Columbia, Brown and Penn to apply as an international student (they're all need-aware for intls, read: stingy, and supposedly second-tier Ivies) i'd choose Columbia for all the amazing opportunities that come with NYC. I know A LOT of my friends are making the same choice for the same reason. Oh and shopping counts too.

To rank the "holy trinity" (quoting Blair Waldorf), it's HYP for me. Please, no more of this Princeton v. Yale in undergrad focus.

Some would argue for Dartmouth's exceptional "undergrad focus" because it's the only Ivy school that's called a "college". Personally, Dartmouth would go right after HYP for me.

Agree. Dartmouth is ridiculously underrated on these boards while IMO Penn is often overrated.

What is with all the cornell hating? I chose it because I really like the ILR major which is unique. And the guy that said it doesn't belong in the ivy league is a pretentious fraud. Wake up; in the real world Cornell is highly respected among employers which is what matters most. Prestige whores like you aren't going to matter when I or other Cornell grads are looking for jobs. What is it about Cornell that makes you think it is so below the other schools in the Ivy League other than your flawed perception of its lack of prestige? Are you even in college yet? If not, your opinion as a student in HS is rather laughable.

Yea. I mean saying Cornell doesn't belong in the ivy league is definitely a ****** move.

Although I don't post much on "which college is better" posts anymore, only because in the end it is a subjective thing since all of these are great, I do think the following is definitely one of the worst arguments I have ever seen:

"(that's why its HYP and not HPY or PHY, imo)" - Nickel75

(and yeah, I'm a Princeton student, and after choosing between many of these, I would obviously say princeton's on top.)

1.H 2.Y 3.P is more of a prestige ranking, IMO.

In terms of undergraduate education and focus, Harvard should not be in the top 3. It's more of a graduate/research powerhouse than an undergraduate college.

cornell and princeton are the only ivy league colleges with excellent engineering programs. Saying cornell is a weak and non prestigious school is compelty retarted.

1 Harvard
2 Yale
3 Princeton
4 UPenn
5 Columbia
6 Dartmouth
7 Brown
8 Cornell

@The Moment...I

The whole "that's why it's HYP" thing was meant to be a joke...i geuss sarcasm doesn't go over that well on the internet. I was ranking the ivy leagues based on a research university as a whole. For undegraduate focus I would have different rankings

Yale/Princeton

Dartmouth

Brown

Columbia/Harvard

Cornell

Penn

^ So I know that Princeton focuses on undergraduates since there are few graduate schools, but how does Yale focus on undergrads?

I'm not disagreeing, by the way, I was just curious...
