Ivy League school

What does an Ivy League school look for in a student?

See accepted students’ stats on decision threads.

Each Ivy League school has a different set of characteristics, but they all look for high-achieving students who are involved in their communities.

Excellent grades, a rigorous curriculum, and good test scores are a minimum baseline.

At a minimum you need what is noted above (excellent grades, strong standardized tests, course rigor in HS, strong letters of recommendation/essays, extracurricular involvement). Once you meet the criteria above, there is no real checklist. All you can do is excel academically, do things you care about and then let the chips fall where they may. Keep in mind that with acceptance rates generally under 10% even students who are well qualified may not gain admittance.

I see that you are a sophomore in HS. IMO it is too early to focus on specific colleges, particularly the hyper-competitive ones. Strive to make the most of your time in HS – work hard in class, find things you care about to be involved in, develop friendships etc. Don’t view HS as a four year prep period for college – view HS as an important experience in and of itself.

National and/or international level awards where you are known for your accomplishments outside your state. I see this more often when accepted kids post their stats.

The most selective colleges want students who will contribute to their schools, not just students who have racked up fancy achievements and really want to go to their school.
