Ivy League Schools: Should i just not apply if i didnt take 4years ofa language i HS

if i have only taken the normal 2 years of language(French 1 and 2) should i just not apply to the ivy league schools. I have a 3.68 Unweighted GPA a 6.something weighted GPA, and a 4.0 College GPA, i got a 1430(CR+M) and an overal 2010 for the SAT( i am planning on taking it again). For SAT II for Bio M i got 690, Math LV1 710, Math LV2 630 ( planning on taking them all again). I go to one of the top 20 schools in the nation. I will be graduating high school with anywhere from 96-104 college credits( i know that most wont be accepted but i thought it would make me look good and i enjoyed taking all the college courses, and they werent the easy college courses either). Im a member of the National English Honors Society, National French Honors Society, National Honors Society, Bible Club, Math Club, Schools Buisness honors society. i have around 300 hours of community service. I have taken the following AP's: AP U.S -5, AP Psychology-5, AP English Lang-4, and AP Biology -4 (self studied), this year i am taking AP English Lit, AP U.S Gov, AP Macroeconomics, AP Calculus AB(but i will self study the difference and take the AP Calc BC test) and probably self study for AP Microeconomics. ohhh and i also did a summer medical program at the university of Miami

Please i would really appriciate the advise i dont want to apply if i dont even have a chance.

And this is my schedule for my senior year maybe that will help me stick out

AP English Literature
AP U.S Government
AP Macroeconomics
AP Calculus AB( Gonna self study the difference and take the BC Test)
(Self Study for AP Microeconomics)
Executive Internship
Dual Enrollment Courses (1st semester)
General Chem 1 w/Lab
Human anatomy and physiology 2 w/lab
Basic Physics
(2nd Semester)
General Chem 2 w/Lab
Microbiology w/Lab
General Bio 2/w lab
and finally Physics With Calculus 1 w/ lab

is the 4 years of language really that important instead of taking the two measly language courses i will be graduating with around 100 college credits its not like i wasted my time
And i am a minority(hispanic) so i already speak another language besides english fluently (spanish)

The only 2 years of foreign language study won’t keep you out – especially if you plan to major in engineering etc. You are also proficient in a second language, which is good. But your test scores are overall low for Ivys – get your standarized tests up and go ahead and apply to a couple of Ivys as super reaches. I wouldn’t get my hopes up - true really for anyone. I would focus on getting a good number of more realistic schools and work very hard on those applications.

^ I concur. Your multilingual fluency offsets taking only two years of a foreign language, but your UW GPA and test scores are on the low side for these schools. Being hispanic should help, but these are still reaches. Of course you should apply. Good luck.

Your GPA sounds low for Princeton.

i Know my GPA is on the low side but i can explain that a bit, i dont know if explaining that would help. My freshmen year i was a slaker and would turn in test and final exams blank, because i knew that i could get a B with minimul effort i ended freshmen year with 6 B’s and 1 A(in P.E) so my GPA was a 3.1. I decided what i wanted to be, a doctor, in my sophmore year and steped it up a notch i ended that year i got 5 A’s and 1 B so my GPA jumped up to a 3.49, and then i left my orignial school to attend school for advanced studies i take college courses in the mornings and all my high school classes in the afternoon( and they are all AP’s) in just my junior year i took a total of 18 classes and recieved 16 A’s and 2 B’s. my GPA jumped now to a 3.68. So that is why my GPA is so low, do you think it would be a good idea to tell all this in my application. i mean my GPA is steadly increasing and im sure that by the end of my senior year i will have at least around a 3.75. And yeah my test scores are on the low side but the first time i took the SAT i got 620 CR, 640 Math, and 500 W), i am a fighter and i am very driven the second time my scores shot up to 720 CR, 710 M and 580 W i increased my overall scores by 250 pt, just studying and reviewing on my own my family is very poor so i cant pay for all these prep books or a tutor, so i would go to the library at school and see if they had books i could use to study. I know that the scores are still on the low end but do you think that the ivy’s will see my determination. This past summer i took 4 Dual Enrolment courses and i did a summer medical program at UM, i was out from 6 am till 11pm for most of my summer studying and participating in the great medical program were we actually got to work and disect real dead bodies. Will my determination show? do you think it would be enough to get me in to an ivy not necesarily princeton. And i will take the SAT again and i will improve my score guarntee by at least another 150 pt

thank you guys for your opinion and i greatly appreciate it to. Please respond to my last post quickly.

and i mean come on how many kids could possibly say they are going to bring around 100 COLLEGE CREDITS OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL WITH A 4.0 COLLEGE GPA thats gotta help me stand out

and when i mean my family is poor i mean bellow 60,00 a year for a family of 5

Have you looked into Questbridge. It seems perfect for you. Princeton might actually give you leeway on the freshman year since they state they dont consider it.

what do you mean they dont consider it? like they dont look at it at all, they recalculate your GPA?

and i have looked at questbridge but i dont like that its binding and i just dont like that

People on CC do not know what type of a student you are! This is why “chances” are completely pointless. It’s not always about numbers. Go ahead and apply.

thanks neuroscience1234, i always here Ivy’s say its not about numbers and that its the character of the students that’s why i think i have a shot, and its not like im super low on grades, or like my course load hasn’t been rigorous, thank you for your advice i greatly appreciate it. If anyone can add anymore advice i would appreciate it .

What college are all these college course credits from? I think that makes a big difference in how impressed Princeton and other schools will be with all your college credits.

It’s not from some fancy high class college because there aren’t to many colleges that do dual enrollment its from Miami Dade college. Ohhh and I made the Deans List to lol for my 4.0 college GPA

iI still think it should look impressive tho just cause this is more challenging than probably most curriculums

It is not binding if you don’t rank it in questbridge.

Princeton does nt say what they do exactly other than state that 9th grade grades are not part of their decisionmaking. Stanford says the same.

Questbridge allows you to apply to several top schools early. So if you pick Princeton, Stanford, Yale and I forget one more, if one of them likes you, do you care which one?

^^Can you speak more about QuestBridge?
OP, I think you’ll be a competitive candidate with higher SAT scores. Just remember, you don’t need Princeton or ANY ivy to become a doctor.

Superman,

Questbridge is not binding. Please go immediately to the site and check it out. It’s a lot of work but it does get you on school’s radar screens and it might open some doors for you at schools you hadn’t thought of. My son gets emails from schools such as Yale just for being in the Questbridge system. (We are not a Questbridge family as our income is in the 60-80K range for family of 5)

Also, my son will have only 3 semesters of college Arabic when he applies. The first semester was worth two years of high school for some reason but still, it is only 3 semesters. I would hope that Princeton would not rule an applicant out since they only “recommend” 4 years of language rather than “require” it.
