Chances for a student who is not a genius or varsity athlete to be accepted into Ivy.

Two years ago I moved from Venezuela to the U.S.A., I was delayed a year (even though they say I was not delayed at all) because of that. Then, I started at a private school which did not let me advance much. I switched to a public school this year and my unweighted GPA still remains as a 4.0 and my weighted 4.45. I have almost 100 community service hours. I go to some club meetings and my French teacher wants me to compete for a country competition in French level 1.

But, I cannot help to wonder what are truly my chances? My ranking is 206 out of 1101. Some people my age take up to 3 or 4 APs I am only taking 1 because I could not take any other. I am not in a varsity sport or have a leadership position in any club. My school is really huge and sometimes it scares me that I might not be good enough.

Freshman Year: English I Honors, Geometry Honors, Creative Writing I & II, Critical Thinking/ Global Studies, Psychology I & II, Biology Honors.

Sophomore Year: AP Human Geography, Chemistry I Honors, Physics I Honors, Algebra II Honors, Pre-Calculus Honors, French I & II, English II Honors.

Planning to do
Junior Year: AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP Spanish online, AP English Lit, AP Gov/ AP US History.

Senior Year: AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C or B, AP Biology, AP English Language.

Activities or Clubs:
- Community Service at the YMCA.
- Chorus Club: 1 year
- Book Club: 1 year

- Track & Field: 1 year

At the new school (100 Community Service Hours or more)
- Mu Alpha Theta: 1 year
- Catholics In Action: 1 year
- French Club: 1 year

Definitely depends on essays and SAT/ACT scores. Your GPA is solid but your EC’s leave a lot to be desired for the Ivies.

I know, but the main problem is that in a such a huge school. Getting a decent position as a president in a club or so is really hard so I usually tutor Middle Schoolers after school. Attend the meetings and activities of the Catholic club with my friends. (After all I am really new to the school itself) and prepare for the French competition so far.

A friend wants to start a club with me next year, so maybe that will help.

SAT/ACT scores – I took the ACT for 9th graders last year and did pretty decently. I prefer the ACT over the SAT, but I still practice with the material on the site for the SAT and ACT as well.

Oh I forgot to mention that I took a SAT Subject Test for Spanish and got an 800.

Bump - Bump - Bump

Bump Bump Bump Bump

I prefer ACT over SAT as well, SAT sucked. I also think it depends on which Ivy you want to go to. I’d say you have a good chance for Cornell. Definately take your friend up on starting the club, I regret not doing that when I had the chance. Good luck :)

Oh I also forgot to mention that I won first place in my school’s Literature Fair for one of the categories.

Thank you n-n and yes Cornell is one of my possible choices. It has a good Computer Science program - what I intend to major in so far.
