What is so great about Ivy schools. I mean do people apply to Harvard because its Harvard? I dont get it. Cant you get a quality education at a state school or some other non- Ivy? What is the hype cause I dont believe it!

heh.. as an Asian, i am fond of names. IVY schools turn to have better reputation than those state colleges, or at lease in my hometown.

true, and that's the plight of the less-distinguished state school. an ivy reputation is self-perpetuating: its initial quality gave rise to a reputation which attracted top students/faculty, which in turn increased its quality and reputation. whether or not it's justified is up for debate, but it's definitely real, and a drain on the rest of the universities in america.

Guess what, for 90% of students the academics aren't what makes a person successful. Its the networks, the reputation, the alumni support, the other students (selectivity) that make them special. Having Henry Ford IV across the hall isn't a bad connection to have. Its just like being with all the other smart kids in your high school classes, those people go on to do big things and so do you. That said, of course in absolutely no way is a top school education a pre-req to a solid career. My boss went to Syracuse, he just happens to be sharp as anything. His kid went to Columbia though.

Because they are preftigious
