COMMENTS:

Still excited after a day of celebration. My choice is between Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford at this point, and I’m really excited I get to make it! My Yale app was weaker since I applied early and was not ready to do that.

Princeton has already sent me their aid estimate: a $48,000 grant! That, plus a campus job, plus my $2,500 scholarship, will mean Princeton will cost me nothing. I got similar good news from Stanford, who is offering me a comparable grant. Now just waiting on Harvard’s financial aid letter.

Congratulations to everyone!

Comments: Oh Duke, I wanted you so very, very badly. After being deferred ED, I knew basically I had no chance, but I still hoped and dreamed (even with not-amazing test scores). Now I hope you lose in the Final Four ;)

I know it’ll be extremely tough to get off Vandy’s waitlist and I’ll most likely be unsuccessful, but I’m going to actively try. People tell me quite often that they can see me at a southern school (haha  ) but I love their whole atmosphere.

Maybe I shouldn’t even be posting here because I didn’t apply to any Ivies, but oh well.

And also I’m 99.9% sure, issy3bella, that I know who you are, and that it’ll be easy for you to figure out who I am. Awkward?

**Comments: **
Don’t get too discouraged from applying, because you never know, but remember to keep your sights in check. I let my imagination take over with Stanford and Yale, and it ends up hurting! Anyways… I’m heavily pursuing Brown, which means another 3 months of waiting for my decision. >_> I have lots of application regret. I’m happy with UC Berkeley, but I shouldn’t have limited myself when I applied to schools. I should have kept the 5 I crossed off on.

Comments:
I applied to Yale early, but was deferred and rejected in the Regular round. It actually didn’t matter to me at all, because I had checked Harvard first. As for the other Ivies, I hope my not going (along with other people) opens up the waitlist so a lot of you can get the chance to go. I don’t plan on staying on Princeton’s waitlist, as I would rather attend Harvard or Stanford.

time to face the music :(

Comments:
I applied to Yale, Princeton, and Stanford via Questbridge but was not matched. I redid my apps and thought I would not get in, since this Mexican kid at my school got likelies from Yale, this other asian twins got likelies from Stanford, and my other Mexican friend got letters from Dartmouth. I thought my EC was sub-par for an Ivy admit, and my essays were not ****-poor, but not omg i gotta admit u great, so I thought I had no hook. I am very grateful and know that I was really lucky. One counselor commented that it would not be weird if I got into Harvard or Yle, or if I get rejected from all Ivies save Cornell. And the both extremes showed in my results.

Accepted: Caltech, Trinity College Cambridge (Maths), Brown, Juilliard, Reed.
**Waitlisted **: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, UChicago.
Rejected: None

Will be attending: CALTECH

Stats
SAT I (breakdown): 2300 (800 Math, 780 CR, 720 Writing)
SAT II: 800 Math II, 800 Physics, 790 Chemistry
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): 5x AIME, 3xUSAMO, 1xUSChO, 1xUSPhO (Physics not Philosophy)

Subjective
Essays: My commonapp essay used a UChicago prompt about games as a starting point for a “stream-of-conciousness” reflection on my time in high school. The headmaster welled up when he read it but I think one would need a better background knowledge of my life for it to have a full effect. Supplement essays were all different, if you actually are curious about any specific ones PM me.

Teacher Rec (Sciences): I don’t know, we had a fairly substantial argument (about the best way to solve a particular linear algebra problem) the day after I asked him to write it.
Teacher Rec (Non-Sciences): I don’t know
Comp Rec: Quite Effusive
Additional Rec (Music): Amazing

Ethnicity

Race: White (Italian)
School Type: Large Private school, sends about 12 to HYPSC each year on top of 65 to Oxbridge.
Location: UK
Legacy: Father and Grandfather went to Yale

Awards and Positions
ASCAP Mourton Gould Award (National music award), now x2 although I got the second one on April 1st so it had no effect
5x Hall Cup for Composition Winner
Awarded the Gowers prize for top Mathematician in the school
House Captain
House Music Captain
House Academic Captain

Reflections
If it’s not in the cards, it’s not in the cards. I never did anything specifically for my application anyway. On a less downer note, I think I did really well and I’ll be attending Caltech next fall!

ADMISSION RESULTS (List only the Ivies, MIT, Stanford, UChicago, and other top schools):

Subjective
Essays: My commonapp essay was about how a counseling experience with diversity completely changed my views on myself, and the supplementary essays were mostly about what I’ve done in terms of my community.

Teacher Recs: Glanced at one of them, and didn’t look at the other. I’m assuming they were both good
Counselor Recs: Glanced at it as well, but I don’t know.

Interviews: To be honest, I do think that my interview for Brown was what got me in, and what kept me out of UPenn and Yale. I had an amazing interview with a Brown alumna who shared so much in common with me, and it was just so easy to talk to her and I actually had a really good time.

Ethnicity

Race: Asian (Chinese)
School Type: Large Public School, Bronze ranked by USNWR

Reflections
I think I knew which schools I wanted to be at, and demonstrated that through my essays and interviews, and just subconsciously chose to show my passions that way. I feel like my essays, especially my commonapp one, were tailored toward a certain type of school. Swarthmore was my first choice, but UPenn was definitely done out of coaxing from my parents, and I’m pretty sure that showed. I am super excited to be a Swattie next year! :D

Accepted: Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Northwestern, WashU, Swarthmore
Waitlisted : UPenn (Wharton)
Rejected: Harvard, Yale (deferred ea)

Reflections
I guess I’m pretty satisfied. My heart was set on Yale and I’m a little bummed about that. But I can’t really complain about the choices I have. Yet, Yale was really my dream school. Nevertheless, I’m not quite sure why things happened the way they did. I’m, as with everyone else who was accepted to these amazing schools, very surprised. Congratulations to all of the other CCers on their amazing acceptances.

ADMISSION RESULTS (List only the Ivies, MIT, Stanford, UChicago, and other top schools):

 • ACCEPTED: Columbia College (LL), Brown, Dartmouth, Northwestern, WashU, Vandy

 • GPA: 3.9 uw
 • EC (scale of 1-5, 5 being most significant): 2
 • Ethnicity/Gender: White Male
 • State or Country (if international): TN

Comments: I was hoping the randomness of this process would somehow get me into Harvard or Stanford, but Brown’s been my dream school since 9th grade and I’m just now learning how awesome Columbia is, so I’m hardly disappointed.

ADMISSION RESULTS

Comments: I am so happy! Chicago and Duke are amazing schools! Plus, I don’t think I would have fit in at HYP anyway, so it’s all good. Also, I’m still really glad I applied to Harvard because my interview was really amazing, and I respect my interviewer so much. He did an Md-PhD with his PhD in Anthropology and somehow made the two fit together, which is similar to what I want to do except with econ. :)
