J, May, or K term

Hi -
This is a question from my D. She is wondering whether there is a list anywhere of small LACs which have this option. We know of St Olaf (J term), Illinois Wesleyan (May term) & Kalamazoo (K term). Is there a searchable website where she can generate such a list? It is a very appealing option to her.

TIA

LOTS of schools have this option. I think the list would be cumbersomely long.

Williams has a January term that they call Winter Study. Students who stay on campus take one official course which is usually in an "off-beat" or experimental direction. There are also a lot of extraneous campus activities and cultural events available and plenty of winter sports. It's a wonderful laid back time for socializing.

After firstyear, students have the option to spend Winter Study off-campus and there are several courses that offer organized travel to other parts of the country or abroad. Or, the student can come up with his/her own program to pursue which usually entails writing a paper about the experience.

<a href="http://www.williams.edu/admin/registrar/winterstudy/courseinfo/courses08.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.williams.edu/admin/registrar/winterstudy/courseinfo/courses08.html</a></p>

Winter study is the single best thing – every Williams student I talked to raved about it!

McDaniel College in Maryland has J term.
Earlham has a May term

Hampshire College has a January Term.

I'm tempted to say Bates, but I'm not positive.

I think almost all schools offer something similar.

Thanks for those suggestions. We've been clicking through websites trying to find schools with that option - seems there has to be a quicker way....

Gee, if more suggestions come in, maybe I'll compile a list for CC. I'll bet there are other families out there that are attracted to this option.

If it's true that almost all schools offer something similar, we've been missing it! Most of the LACs we look at are on the semester system. Maybe we're missing the code words for the shorter terms with eclectic offerings. What should one google other than J, May, or K?! Stay? Play? It's gotta rhyme. Oh, I know - "play-n-pay".

Dartmouth's D-Plan. They are on a quarter system and sophomores are required to stay on campus during the summer (with the option to take a leave term any other term during their sophomore or junior year). Most students (about 60%) also go abroad a term so I guess it ends up being similar to Kalamazoo's K Plan.

Gustavus Adolphus has a J term. Freshmen typically are on campus and take one class. My D enjoyed it--very relaxed.

I'm not aware of a "K term" at Kalamazoo. However, the K Plan is the name for the curriculum comprised of four components; on-campus liberal arts courses and a Senior Individualized Project required for all students, and career development internships and study abroad programs that are optional but have an 80+% participation rate.

Thanks bagoshells & GoBlue. Sorry I screwed up the K-thing at Kalamazoo. It is not on D's list. Gustavus is, though - glad to hear your D enjoyed it.

They do sound like great fun. Makes me want to go back to college.

Colgate too.

If you are interested in short, intensive study (as opposed to fun stuff), look at colleges with one calss at a time-- Colorado College and Cornell College (IA, not Cornell U in NY).
