What is the J term, what is offered, do all students participate?

It is a winter 2 week term. Classes offered change every year. Most students do not participate. You get 3 full credits for a 2 week class - which means you have class all day. It is stressful but I know some people like it. You still have to pay for the course outside of your normal tuition. I always worked during Jterm but one year I lived with a girl taking a JTerm class. She liked it but I never saw her, and I was only working part time. It was a lot of work for her!

Also you have less of a break before real classes, and might be stressed out before the real semester even begins. Spring semester is LONG.

Our D took a J Term class this past winter. She had to be back early for rush and her sport practice so she figured she might as well kill two birds with one stone and take a class. It actually turned out to be one of her favorite courses because it was smaller and the students got closer since they were together every day for several hours. She’s contemplating doing an abroad J-Term this winter so for her, it was a good experience.

As a transfer, I took the J-term once to catch up on credits after taking only four classes one semester. It is basically a 10 day cram session in which a whole semester’s worth of information is packed in. Normally the classes consist of: athletes, people who need credits to graduate on time, and people who really are bent on graduating early. I personally would not subject myself to all that work if it was not a dire necessity.
