January Term?

I was checking the UVA academic calendar in preparation for making transportation and hotel arrangements for move-in day in the fall....can someone explain to me what the January term is all about?

What kind of courses? for what kind of credit?

Do all students enroll for January term?

I can't believe that this wasn't mentioned anytime/anywhere when we were on campus for preview two weeks ago....

it’s like “intersession” - it’s a 2 week session that you can take 1 class, 3 credits - you’re in class the entire day. it’s like an insane summer session. people do it. i’m not sure how. i would be burned out for spring semester before it even started… obviously it’s not required. you can see the website if you google. i’m pretty sure it’s virginia.edu/januaryterm

does it cost extra?

When is move in day this year?

I did J-term and I have to warn you it’s mentally exhausting. Ironically, however, you come into Spring semester with a fresh mind because the schedule isn’t as hectic.

A great J-Term option is the study abroad program. For an OOS student, the cost wasn’t much more than a normal 3.0 credit course and financial aid IS available (I love UVA’s finaid office  ). I went to Berlin in January 2008 with Dean/Professor Stewart, and it was one of my best experiences at UVA. It was intense in that we were constantly moving around, but I learned so much about German culture and life that it hardly felt like “work”. It’s also a great option if you can’t work a regular study abroad program into your coursework.
