I was wondering if anyone had insight into whether it would be worth it or not to go to IU Jacobs for music ed (despite it being known as a performance school) or to go to Michigan State where there are far more music ed majors.
Thoughts? The cost is the same for each school for me. So it’s simply between the schools now.
Side note, I play Piano.
I know nothing about music but I went to IU and lived next to the music school for 4 years. The music school, even for music ed, is very rigorous and you are with a huge number of outstanding musicians. The facilities were outstanding year ago and have improved over the years. I think IU would be an easy choice if you have the music ability. If you question that, I would avoid IU. Bloomington is a wonderful college town and the campus is gorgeous.
Where do you want to start your teaching career? Each state sets its own certification requirements.
That’s the catch: I could see myself in either state. At this point it’s just between what the two schools offer.
Then you should carefully compare the two programs. What classes do you need to take? What electives do they offer that you’d like to take? How hard would it be to complete both the vocal and the instrumental music programs? How hard would it be to become certified for all grades K-12 rather than just secondary? Which program has you observing in classrooms sooner? Which requires more frequent and/or longer practicums? What other areas can you become certified in that will make it easier for you to find a job (ESL? Special Ed.? Theater?)?
