Hi so I know JMU has a Pre-physician assistant program, but what is that exactly. Does that mean that it gives me my bachelors degree when I am done with the Pre physician assistant program or does that just give me my prequisites so then when I am done with the program I can apply to get a bachelors degree in Physician assistant studies? Also I am confused about the master of physician assistant in JMU. Do I need to have a bachelors degree in physician assistant studies before applying to that or can I just take the Pre-physician assistant program and major in lets say biology, then apply to the master of physician assistant studies program? Please help!!!!!!:)

I think you get a Bachelor’s degree with all the pre-requisites (including about 1000 Hrs! of patient contact) for a Master’s program in Physician Assistant ¶. No, they do not award a BS degree in PA. You may want to call and confirm.

You might also want to explore other 4 year (BS) PA programs that are offered at a few colleges.

I am sorry I am a little confused on what you said. Are you saying I do get a bachelors degree after the Pre PA program or are you saying I do not get one.

Yes, it looks like JMU has structured Pre-PA like a Pre-Med, where one can graduate with any major and obtain a Bachelor’s degree. The pre-requisite courses one takes in the undergraduate Pre-PA degree enables one to fulfill the requirements for admission to a Post Baccalaureate degree in PA.

Yes, you will get a bachelors degree in any major of your choice, with the pre-requisite courses for PA. Hope this clears any confusion. As always, suggest that you verify/clarify with the Pre-PA adviser at JMU.

As mentioned previously, it might be possible to obtain PA credential by doing an undergraduate degree solely in PA (instead of doing Pre-PA, followed by post-Bac in PA).

Ok Thank you!! Also do you think I would be able to graduate from JMU from their Pre physician assistant course and apply for their Master Physicians Assistant Program?

There does not appear to be a correlation that one would automatically be admitted to a Master’s program in PA after having done the Pre-PA at JMU:

The % of students enrolled with JMU connection has been steadily dropping (from 31% to 26%) over a 3 year period (2006 - 2008)

The percentage of students enrolled from the qualified applicants is roughly about 10-11%

The % of students enrolled from VA has also been steadily declining (92% in 2006 to 55% in 2008), suggesting that the competition from Out of State students is stiff.

However, this question may better be answered by the adviser at JMU. Here is a partial list of student profile.
