James Scholars

Has anyone heard about being named a James Scholar? What is the timetable for notification?

I was notified about a week or two ago that I was named a James Scholar for the College of Applied Health Sciences.

Got an email just a few minutes ago saying I was a James Scholar for College of Engineering.

Same here. How many students are offered this per year?

i got an email for James Scholar in Engineering. I’m not sure how many are offered, but you can check out the list of freshman scholars here

https://wiki.engr.illinois.edu/display/engrjames/List+of+Scholars

My son got his James Scholar email today as well. Yeah! Now if some money would come too!

Has anyone heard from LAS?

My daughter received a letter dated Jan 5 from the College of Applied Health Sciences

I also got an email for engineering. i don’t think there is a set number of James Scholars for each program, there are just benchmark scores/performance. If you go the the college of engineering James Scholars page there is a HUGE list of all of the current scholars.

My daughter got her email from Engineering yesterday, no $$$ but it is a nice bit of news in a terribly stressful time.

I received my letter from Iliinois today that I am a James Scholar in the LAS.

I got into the James Scholars honors program from Engineering. Can someone please tell me whats so special about it? (Yes, I could google it, but I’d rather hear about it from people who actually experienced it/know people in it)

Son is James Scholar. He gets to register before anybody else. Great benefit to be able to schedule your classes, get the classes you want, when you want them. He feels it is worth it.

my son notified yesterday of being a James Scholar…I’m trying to figure the benefit

Register for James Scholar? Do we need to do anything before we send the deposit (may 1st) for James Scholar? Or, we can register next year’s course before we send the deposit to UIUC?

If you got the email, you’re automatically in the program for a semester or two, as long as you decide to attend UIUC. To continue, you’ll need to fulfill GPA and other requirements.

Lore- thanks. Yes, I got the mail in Jan.

The main benefit is definitely being able to register for classes before everybody else (at least most people). Although you have to do an “honors project” in a class each semester or you can do an Illinois leadership program event (which I do). I guess it’s juts something that you can put on your resume and doesn’t really require a lot of work to keep up. You just have to maintain a 3.5 GPA and take 15 credit hours each semester.

May I ask “stupid” questions -

What is the grading scale in UI? 4 or 5? There are 4, 5 and 6 grading in high schools, but how about university?

Does UI has “curve” system?

How hard for keep 3.5 GPA (in Engineering) in UI?

It’s kind of off topic, but I really want to know. Thanks.

@march10success2: Those are not stupid questions! I actually would be interested in the answers to them. I do know with 90% certainty that UIUC has a 4.0 scale and I don’t believe there is a school-wide curve system, but a current student would be better equipped to answer your last question.

Just to clear up a bit of misinformation, the minimum GPA for James Scholars is 3.3, not 3.5 (but it is 3.5 for ECE).
