My son got an email today about the James Scholars program. Does anyone know if James Scholars might be likely to get a merit scholarship?

I got the email today as well.

Yeah same.

My D got a post mail letter about her being in James today, but no e-mail. I think it’s a mistake because letter says CLAS, and she’s in FAA.

We are from out of state and don’t know much about this program. From what I have read on the website, it does not appear that the university spends much on this program. It appears that there are not a lot of honors courses or sections offered. At least for engineering, they talk about setting up a contract with the professor to do extra work. Just what a student needs! Does anyone have experience with this program and whether or not it was a positive experience? Thanks.

Looks to me like it’s the Honors Program only and not a scholarship. The link below is for the DGS page, but there are links to the other colleges towards the bottom.

[James Scholar Honors Program, The Division of General Studies, University of Illinois](http://www.dgs.illinois.edu/honors/jamesscholar.html)

Got the email too!! At least for engineering- it seems that there’s not much on offer(except the guidance from “faculty member” & 1-2 honors courses)!! And you’ve got to maintain a 3.5gpa (for ECE majors!!)

It would’ve been lovely if there was a scholarship along with it, but the sheer size of the freshman “James Scholar Honors” list indicates that it is NOT a big deal!!

Early registration priority might be the biggest benefit.

Looks like this program is in more than one of the colleges. Here is the link to information about the program in CLAS. [James Scholar Program Details « James Scholars « Honors Programs « Students « College of Liberal Arts & Sciences « University of Illinois](http://www.las.illinois.edu/students/honors/james/program/)

Note that one big advantage is early registration preference. I’ve encouraged my son to think about trying to participate in honors programs at whichever school he goes to because typically there is some preference, either in courses, registration or housing.

Doesn’t look like money is attached to this.

I’ve looked over previous years’ threads and you are right - it looks like the main advantage is priority registration (which is a big plus). The James Scholars program appears not to have been revamped in decades - it does not have the smaller honors courses (except for a few) or the honors housing that many universities now offer.

I got this today also for engineering. Was hoping to see “Full tuition scholarship” somewhere in the email. Nope. Anyway, congrats to everyone who got in! If I were in-state I would definitely be attending, but it just costs too much (Texas resident).

A SAT score of 1450/1600 gets you in the James Scholar program if I remember correctly.

Yeah, early registration is another benefit!!

@elunium - yes a 1450/1600 on the SAT or a 33 on the ACT is the qualifying mark for freshman “James Scholar” students. After that it is a 3.3 gpa(any major) or a 3.5 gpa(ECE major) that you need to maintain!

I’ve got it too,

James Scholars who graduate with “University Honors” are also awarded the Latin honors of In cursu honorum.

Nothing important but kinda cool I guess.

yes me too!

I got Turing Scholars Programme in UT Austin.
That program appears to be good when financial aid,
separate accomodation and all other factors taken
into consideration.
rishav17 and other friends: please guide me which one is good?

@Krishna when did you get the UT Austin decision? I’ve applied there too…

prad123

It is on 20th morning.
Hope you will also get my friend.
We will meet there, likely.

Each UIUC college has its own James Scholars program and what is needed to qualify differs among the colleges. It is designed to be offered to about the top 12-15% of those admitted to each college. There is no scholarship attached to the James Scholars.

Drusba,

Do you know if it is strictly based on ACT score? And has the business school released its list yet?

^ @Samantha12 - Here’s the link to the business school’s James Scholar program
