***January 2016 SAT (US Only) Thread***

Hey Guys and Gals :slight_smile: I was wondering if Erica Meltzerā€™s ā€œThe Critical Readerā€ is worth getting? Thanks :smiley:

Iā€™m gonna go for a 2400 this time cause YOLO. And Iā€™ve gotten it in practice tests so its not impossibleā€¦just like a 10% chance lol.

@JuicyMango noo get a 2400 because you can do it again! Itā€™s very likely that youā€™ll get that score. :wink:

Ericaā€™s books are worth gettingā€¦ no questions asked.

Finally got to studying for this SAT. I guess Iā€™ll do an essay and a section each day.

Anyone here get an 11 or 12 on the essay? Any tips you could share? Do you try to vary your sentence structure, connect back to your thesis, and use SAT vocab words? How do you do this (if you do)? I got a 10 on the essay 2 times in a row now and would love to improve it so my writing score has some cushion.

@JuicyMango did u get my PM bro

@JuicyMango

I got a 12 essay in October, and a 10 essay in December. I looked over both essays, and I honestly felt that the December essay was better. The difference between the two was that in October I used around 10-15 vocab words throughout the essay. In December, I only used a couple. Both times, I wrote the whole two pages. So I guess the keys to a high scoring essay are vocab words and length.

11 and 12 here! I always use at least four well-developed examples, one historical, one psychological (Iā€™m a huge psych nerd), one literary, and one modern day. I suppose I vary my sentence structure and use elevated vocabulary, but (and beware the obnoxiousness here!) I think it comes naturally to me. Nevertheless, I think great, intelligent examples, a solid thesis, and a short but solid conclusion will be the best for you (and of courseā€“fill up the pages).

hello!! can u help in my sat igot math 510 Cr 310 wr 460 iwant ti increase loke 300 or more

@bobthebuilder13 @rougesneakers Thanks guys. I think I should start using actual examples, because on the December SAT I made up my examples so I couldnā€™t develop that deep insight that 12 essays probably require. Any examples you guys remembered personally? How long were your conclusions, and were they very brief or did you actually take the time to make them ā€œmemorableā€? And do you usually connect back to your thesis at the beginning, middle, or end of your examples? Lol sorry for so many questions but the last thing I want is a 10 for the third (and final) time :p.

@JuicyMango try using sat words on ur essay u melt

lol i think this kid wants to fight itā€™s like fight me irl m8

@JuicyMango can you post or private massage me with your 10 essays :). I am taking the SAT for the first time and the essay is the section Iā€™m the most worried about. I am building my portfolio of examples but it still takes me aobut 35 minutes to write a well developed essay. Do you use a template when writing yours?

do you guys think the best way to review the math problems is to consistently go over them?

@JuicyMango

My conclusions were pretty short. Usually about three to four sentences. I connect back to the examples at the end of each body paragraph. Some examples I used were Animal Farm and Into the Wild. I always like to use book examples, but it doesnā€™t really matter what kind of example you use as long as it connects to the position advocated for in your thesis.

Iā€™m really hoping for above a 2350! The October test curve was pretty harsh, do you guys think that January will be easy or hard??? Iā€™m just worried bc its collegeboardā€™s last chance to screw us over on the current exam

@smileydinosaur i think it will be like octoberā€™s

If the curve is harsh, the test is easy. If the curve is generous, the test is harder. Worrying about curves isnā€™t useful.

@alwaysrunning hey maybe you should get Erica Meltzerā€™s book on SAT grammar. There are some tips here and there that might help you reduce the number of WR questions you get wrong. Plus, its always nice to sharpen your skills :stuck_out_tongue:
