January Ssat Scores In!!!!

I have a question about the overall score. I haven't received my scores yet, but when people post their overall it seems a lot higher than the average. What is the difference between overall and average?

Ahhhh!!! I still haven't received my scores. I have a Taft interview in about two hours so maybe they will tell me.

I am going to make some assumptions and if I'm wrong, then "Never mind!"

I think you meant to ask this: "I have a question about the overall PERCENTILE. I haven't received my scores yet, but when people post their overall it seems a lot higher than the average [OF THE PERCENTILES]. What is the difference between overall and average?"

I believe that they add the scores to come up with a total score and then they determine what %ile that total score is in. So if you score in the high 90s on all three sections, you're likely to be in the 99%ile overall -- even though that's ABOVE the average %ile for all three sections. That's because there are people who do well on one or two sections but hit a road bump on other sections.

Think of it like a baseball hitting contest where 1,000 contestants take three separate at-bats (one for each section of the test). There are five possible scores for each at-bat. Out (or 0), Single (or 1), Double, Triple, Home Run. You get ranked for each at-bat as well as the total bases for all three at-bats combined.

If someone hits a triple for all three at-bats, their 3 points for any one of the at-bats may not put them in the top 1% (top 10) for that at-bat. But their combined 9 bases could be one of the top 10 combined scores.

Consistent achievement counts. And that's how -- and why -- your overall %ile can be higher than the average of your %ile scores for the three sections of the test.

My scores were emailed to me at about 12:30, and my interviewer also told me my scores.

Verbal Score 722
(Personal Score Range: 701 - 743, SSAT Percentile 78%)

Math Score 686
(Personal Score Range: 665 - 707, SSAT Percentile 35%)

Reading Score 686
(Personal Score Range: 665 - 707, SSAT Percentile 70%)

Total Score 2094
(Personal Score Range: NA, SSAT Percentile 64%)

I'm so happy with my new scores!!!!!! My old score was a 43 overall (26 M, 56 V, 54 R)

Those scores invite the admission team to say, "Okay, that looks good, let's see what the rest of the package tells us."
