My university, Upenn, gives an undergrad major in East Asian Languages and Cultures with a specification of our choice (between China, Korea, and Japan). I decided to do it because I'm a huge fan of Japanese culture, but what exactly can I do with a Japanese degree?

The courses are about 8 language courses (which will basically reach full fluency at the advanced or above-intermediate level), two history courses (covering pretty much all of Japan), and some cultural courses and one course on Chinese History as background.

So what jobs/positions can you see me in? I have considered interpreter, translator, teacher, and maybe ambassador/some type of international job...but I'm not sure. What else can I do with the degree and do you have any advice? Thanks.

Btw, I'm also doing a double major with Comp Sci.

I am doing a Comp Sci degree major alongside my Jap one, and I plan to take side classes (3/4) in design (web design, Photoshop, Indesign, Maya Animation or so). The CS major is a light version at Upenn (12 courses instead of the usual math + 16)

I would talk to an advisor or someone who does career services. While it’s great to study what you “love”, parlaying that into a career might be an issue. What are you trying to do longterm with these skills (and mean they all scream multimedia to me - so advertising with an emphasis on Japanese markets)?

This is my current situation also, I plan on double majoring in Asian Studies and Japanese while doing an International business minor. I’m just not sure of the job availability once I graduate. UGH

@ANDS!
I don’t have a hugely concrete plan in mind. I was thinking of working with animation, websites, graphics in general, movies, video games, and just jumping around those fields’ jobs whenever I got bored or completed a work that interested me, looking for new things and keeping myself entertained. I consider Japanese since its my favorite language and I’ve considered living in Japan when I grow up too.
