jas0n's Official UCI Q&A Thread

showfactory, that's what i was thinking too.

i might much rather take writing 39 b/c.

Is everyone trying to be an overachiever nowadays?! Everyone seems to want to take two million courses and work during college. Anyway here are my responses.

The Brian:

All students in the school of humanities is required to take humcore so that means you will be competing with those who love to write as ShoeFactory said. Typically only maybe 2-4 out of 20 students in a writing class gets an A (this is from my experience in the WR30 series and in UCI in general). However, what does a grade mean to you really? Ask yourself that. For example, will you go to graduate studies?

Evilleprechaun:

In my honest opinion, I don’t believe you can take on a job with a 19-unit schedule let alone be able to fully handle the 19-unit course load to begin with. However, I still have high chances of being wrong. I just wanted to say that you’re transitioning into the college life and you may be barely prepared for what’s coming without the comfort of the environment you know very well, your home life. Many will believe they are Superman upon approaching a task or a job they have no experience in. For example, you’ll often see college graduates walking into their new jobs thinking they’re hot **** only to see they are just a newbie.

I apologize for the rambling. I just wanted to drop my two cents.

I kinda have to get some job, as i have to pay my way starting junior year minus tuition (room and board, books, food, anything else). Mayhaps I can lighten the load a bit...

I at least feel adequately prepared for the load though. Took 6 AP classes last year. Did great in them all, too. I just hope it actually prepared me, instead of just feeling that way. Though I'm hardly trying to overachieve.

yeah, i plan on going to grad school, so grades are important.

the brian

i got an A in writing portion of humcore 1C. got B's in the rest. did essays night before. didnt go to half the lectures. didn't even buy a third of the books required. didn't fully read ANYTHING.

ardnt for the win!

but that's just me.

during days when you have like 2-3 hours gaps before your classes what do you do exactly?

buddy:

people do the following (not in any order):
-sleep on campus
-eat lunch on campus
-walk back to your dorm since your'e a freshie(biking is awesome) and do w/e you want
-attend office hours
-go to the library and sleep and/or study

That's pretty much what people do haha.

oh ok thanks

Jason, I have a problem. In high school my counselor was my favorite teacher because he takes care of everything for me and always there for me when I ask questions. But now I'm horrified when I find out that college counselor is not gonna follow each and everyone closely; they only help when you come to them. So I was wondering if you could tell me how to pick classes. I know webreg is there but I'm still confused. What are breath-courses? Are they similar to the GED thing or core classes that we had to take in high school? So to prepare myself for orientation when we register for classes what do you suggest I should do? Thanks a lot.

sweetdream: the counselors basically tell you what to take given your major/needs/ap test credit. i dont think theres much to think about before orientation. just know what major you want or how relaxing of a schedule you want.

whats your major?

What's the process of dropping a class?
I'm a bio major considering taking bio 93, chem 1a, writing 39b, bio 2a, and math 2a which would bring me to 17 units. But i'm not sure if i can handle it in my first qr. should i reg for math 2a and drop it for a later qr. if i can't handle the courseload?

sweetdream:

Hey, I understand you may be a bit worried about the whole situation. The college life does ask you to be more independent. I only go to my couneslor when I want things done. I come to her prepared with everything she needs. She loves how prepared I am for her :]. Anyway, I'd love to help more thoroughly. Hit me up on AIM when you are free. I might not be too available because of my current schedule at home (7 hrs of class a day!).

goober7011:

17 units, in this case, will be a lot because you are taking all hard classes. However, sign up for it first and see.The first two weeks of class you are allowed to edit your schedule freely on webreg like you did at orientation. After that, online access will be unavailable and you have until week 6 of class to beg your teacher for a signature to drop. Be careful though. Some prof. might not sign it and will ask you to go to the dept. office to get dropped (they will NOT let you unless you have something like a doctor's notice to prove you were sick during a test).

Sorry if this question has been asked before >_<

My friend told me that a requirement for admissions is a 3.0 gpa for our senior year. She got a D in Calculus, setting her under 3.0. She emailed someone from admissions and they told her she had a chance of being revoked. If her admissions is revoked, what are her choices after that?

staplers:

Her choices after would be a school that is still accepting applicants over the summer (most likely UC Riverside) or community college.

hi jas0n, hope all is well. Im gonna be a freshmen at irvine this fall and im a undecided/undeclared as of now. I plan on majoring in business administration (which ironically isn't available until fall '08 and chances of getting into that major is probably slim). How can i increase my chances of getting into that major? i've registered for math 2a, which is one of the lower-division requirements for this major. I've also registered into intro. to business course, but it's not one of the requirements; should i still take it? I've been thinking about enrolling into business statistics, but im scared taking 2 maths at the same time will be hard. The other classes i've registered for is uni. studies 2 and writing 39a. This totals 14 units. Should i think about adding another class?

And a question about PLUS loans, if you know anything about it. Do you know the different repayment plan(s)?

Thank you for your time and help Jas0n.

Head2collision:

Hey Head2collision. I'm really not sure about the plans for the business admin major. However, I would strongly suggest any classes that fit under teh course requirements of that major. The department will view the things you've completed to decide whether you should be admitted into the major or not. Taking two math classes shouldn't be hard at all since the other one is just business statistics. You'll be fine. 14 units is a good start. I wouldn't recommend adding anything more unless you feel like you want to work a lot right off the bat. As for PLUS loans, I can't really help you out. I'm not dealing with any financial aid stuff.

how do you know who your admission counselor is ?

buddy:

Your admission counselor was posted on the myadmissions website back in the day. It should be the same for you, but I could be wrong.

Hi, Jason. =) Firstly, thank you (and others who've helped out) for your patience and effort in answering our questions. This thread has been very helpful!

Secondly, one member mentioned something about being exempt from some placement tests, should we have earned sufficient grades in those subj. areas. So.. as a bio major, I was wondering, if I took Chem 1A and Pre-Calc my senior year at a CC and passed with Bs, would I be able to bypass the placement exams for these 2 subjects? Or does the exemption only account for AP classes? =/

Hi Jason, do you think I could choose genetics as a major? Do they allow that? Somebody told me that you don't need to be sure and they won't ask what your major is until junior year is that right? Also is it true that if once I choose engineering as my major I would have to stick with it and can't change?
