Hi,
I'm not sure if a lot of people here take computer programming, but I am taking an Introductory Java class spring semester and was wondering if anyone here knows generally how Java is. I've heard that it is pretty challenging, a lot of math...and it's not surprising since the class is the prereq for AP Comp. Science AB at my school. But I want diverse opinions, so anybody know how Java is? What do you recommend doing to do well in the class. Also, anybody here take AP Comp. Science? I was thinking about that for junior or senior year and have no clue on challenging the AP is..any comments would be nice.

Java is pretty easy compared to other languages: C++, LISP. Yet, it is not Visual Basic.
I don't think one should have any problems with programming in Java if one has no problems with programming at all.

I took the computer math course (pre req of AP) and it was fun and challenging. Most of the problems require crtical thinking (like looking for patterns). Sometimes though I just got frustrated and just gave up. The biggest program (although not the hardest) I wrote was a hangman game featuring Bart Simpson as the one being hanged!! I took comp math in 10th grade and am going to take AP comp sci my senior year. Junior year I am packed with AP chem, AP US online , Spanish 3(i think sp 3 is hard) , math analysis , physics , science research and english 11 honors. Until senior year I am just briefly reading from time to time the 5 steps to a 5 AP comp.sci book just so I don't forget.

I have taken Computer Science and might I say Java is pretty easy. The only real math I can remember that you do is like conversions from binary, decimal, and hexidecimal. Oh, that and mod division. Everything else is stuff you should have done in your math classes.

The math is just basic, but creative thinking is what is important in this class.
