S2 is considering applying and is wondering what the opportunities are for playing in a Jazz Ensemble at Tulane? He plays drums in one of the top HS Jazz Bands in the country, which this year has played at Lincoln Center in NY and toured France and Italy performing at town squares and various Jazz festivals. He loves Jazz, but is undecided about majoring or minoring in music.

I strongly suggest your son talk to Leland Bennett, the director of the LBC (the student center). Leland is a jazz musician of many years and knows the scene, and he also directed a group I was in while I was there, The Tulanians (I know, hokey name but it was great).

Leland is a nice guy and will give your son the lowdown. It would be awesome to see the Tulanians ressurected, although I have to say that would be a LOT of work. But those kinds of opportunities are fully supported by the administration at Tulane if he is willing to pull it together. But there are certainly jazz groups already in place, I am sure.

There are also a number of people he can talk to that are younger and more active in the current Jazz scene, such as Jesse McBride

Jesse is a wonderful guy whom both my children got to know, as he generously gave his time as an instructor at a “camp” for gifted students they went to, AICL. We were so surprised and pleased to see him then listed as a tutor at Tulane and see the spot about him in the Tulanian Magazine.

These are a couple of rescources I know of, but I am sure there are others as well. He should not be hesitant about calling or e-mailing these people and others. I can say with confidence they will be glad to share their knowledge and help answer his questions.

We really appreciate the info. Thank you very much.
