Jazz combo okay for music submission?

My son's preparing a recording to send for a music submission. He plays jazz guitar. One of his pieces is an original where he plays melody line and his friend plays bass guitar and another person plays chords on piano. Vassar doesn't want "ensembles like a choir or a rock band" and this trio certainly isn't that, but will they look askance at three people playing together, he would like to know?

thanks, I realize this is a rather arcane question (and I don't want to call the school to ask)

I’m submitting music supplements to colleges - and I think it’s fine - FOr instance, a classical violinist is allowed to have a piano accompany them. So in your son’s case, the piano and bass would just be background/accompaniment. It’s not an orchestra, chorus, rock band, where everyone is featured prominently - I think he’s fine - good luck! I’m not applying to vassar btw…haha

Thank you! That’s exactly what I told my son — but, alas, I am only his mother and therefore my opinion has very little weight (hahaha). Good luck to you too!!!

Sure no problem - thanks!
