I am interested in good academic colleges in Northwest (in the states) with jazz programs. I go to a school which is known for being one of the best jazz schools in the country. I am also very involved in academics (Latin, several years ahead in math, AP classes). Do have any suggestions for schools?

Hi basskid, you may want to re-post this on the music-majors forum. There are some experts that regularly read that post and offer their expertise.

Hello! I’m from the Northwest and can maybe help you out

Lewis & Clark
Portland State University
Cornish College of the Arts

Those are probably the strongest I can think of off the top of my head, others to check into would be U of O, and Washington State schools

Your high school sounds identical to my son’s - might even be the same one. Does it have to be the Northwest? I think your choices are very limited there for combining both high end academics with a thriving jazz scene.

If you’re willing to look elsewhere my son’s friends in the jazz band who were interested in both academics and jazz went to Oberlin Conservatory/College, Columbia, NYU and UCLA.

If I were you I would also look at Tufts/NEC and Harvard/NEC. And Northwestern and Michigan, Wesleyan, and USC.

No idea what kind of jazz program Whitman in Walla Walla has - but it would probably suit your other criteria. Perhaps you could look into Reed with gigging possibilities in Portland?

Do you attend Garfield High School? I can’t think of any other high school that’s very well known for its jazz program in the NW.

Unfortunately, if a strong jazz program is what you want, the NW is not really the place to look.
