My son is suddenly interested in schools in the Seattle area (his sister lives there) as well as Oregon and Colorado. We’re East Coasters with no knowledge of the area. He’s interested in music education and loves jazz. Not sure where to look!
U of Colorado’s school of music has a pretty good reputation and even gives out some scholarships.
Yes, CU Boulder has a conservatory style College of Music with a large endowment. They are very generous with merit scholarships.
In Seattle, check out the University of Washington’s School of Music:

University of Puget Sound is an LAC in the PNW with a reputable music program.
Check out University of Denver, Lamont School of Music
I second University of Puget Sound for the Pacific NW! I am a UPS School of Music alumni, and while many things have changed in 30 years, they have a solid reputation. I have many college friends making their livings as professional musicians and music educators!
A local friend’s kid (from SF Bay area) just settled on U of Oregon, going as a music education major. She looked at several other schools … not sure what else she was choosing from, but really liked the program and the feel of the school.
Good to know, thank you!
So many of my kids’ music teachers seem to have come from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA - east side of the mountains so not so green as the western side. It’s where the State Solo Ensemble takes place. The campus seems to be in the middle of nowhere; my kids were unimpressed with the campus. However, as far as education goes, it does attract good students, including one of my kids’ classmates who is very active in jazz (both band and choir, as well as the other ensembles) and was part of the all state jazz band. He plans to attend there in the fall to continue with music.
Western Washington University in Bellingham has a nice campus and offers music education. The Marrowstone Music Festival takes place there every summer.
Until my S’s did jazz in HS, I didn’t realize how much of a jazz scene there was in the Seattle area. There are only four HSs in my district; yet 2 of them made it to the final 15 (I think that’s the #) of the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival in NYC. The band directors in the area enthusiastically promote jazz music with some being performers in their own right. While I’m only familiar with HS jazz, I can’t imagine it not spilling into the college scene in the area.
Lastly, FWIW our HS makes a yearly trip to the U of Idaho Lionel Hampton School of Music Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho (about 6 hours from Seattle)- in case your S wanted to consider ID as well Haven’t been there, so I can’t speak to what the campus is like.
Thanks @Busy_Momma !
I second the U Denver, Lamont school.
Solid private school, in a great city that supports the arts.
