kew091792 Congrats on moving on to round 2 in Houston Region. I’m in PA.
Fanatika, not sure when contact will be made for Charlotteville weekend. We are still in the process of 2nd round of Regional interviews. Going from 47 to 7 this week and then down to only 1 from our area sent to Charlotteville. The Jefferson Scholar who greeted each of us at the interviews said she thought 120 go to the weekend and 30 are selected as scholars. Does that sound like what others have heard?

creativecrew - are you from philadelphia region? i am i havent heard yet… have you?

I’m also from the Philadelphia region (hi shamrock!) and I received an e-mail yesterday that I made it to the second round of interviews, taking place this weekend! And creativecrew, what region are you from?

awww i didnt get one. glad i tried and got to meet everyone tho! good luck 007!!!

I’m not moving on…I’m kind of disappointed but for some reason I expected it? It just hurts, and makes me really scared for UVa college decisions. :(

not moving on in the scholarship process is deffinately not an indication that you won’t get into uva tangentqueen! If your school thought so well of you that you recieved your indication in the first place, you deffinately have an awesome chance and should not be worried! Also, it looks good for admissions when your app says jeff scholar nominee:)

My first interview is taking place this Sunday. Could anyone who has previously had an interview for the scholarship give me an idea of the questions that the interviewers asked? I was told that one part of the interview would pertain to my academics and leadership while the latter part would pertain more to how I think in terms of current events (I expressed international relations as my interest). Are there any particularly unique/weird questions that I should be prepared for?

Also, one more questions: Do all people nominated by their school get interviews? Is it an accomplishment at all to be asked for an interview?

****nomination, not indication lol

Hey you guys,
Current upperclassman Jeff scholar here.

1) The echols/rodman process and the scholarship process are completely separate. A lot of Scholars are not echols, though they’re all perfectly qualified…I really don’t know what goes into the echols selection, but I think they focus on writing ability.

2) Interview questions are about getting to know you. They’ll ask you about your favorite books, classes, future aspirations, what in your family shaped you, stuff like that. Depending on your committee, they might give you a hard question about a current issue. You just have to do the best you can and answer honestly (NO BS!). They don’t really expect high school seniors to be up to date on all the news, unless politics/geography is your thing. The people who do the best are real, humble, and just do the best they can. I can’t stress this enough: Don’t try to impress them with your knowledge or achievements!! You’re only 18 or whatever… they get hundreds of kids like that. Just show them who YOU are, stand out by being relaxed and real and open to new ideas.

3) A little over a hundred go to finalist weekend, and about 30 are offered the scholarship. Usually about 5-10 alternates are also offered once some turn it down.

4) If you don’t move on, it’s not the end of the world. Something like 20% of UVA undergrads were in the selection process at some point. And non-scholar finalists get a little money towards UVA.

5) The number of interview rounds depends on your region. Bigger regions have more levels of interviews. The number of finalists that a region can send also varies.

if you’re a finalist to go to selection weekend does that mean you’re accepted to UVA?

@YANKSFAN5
Yes

YAY! Thanks

anyone here going to selection weekend?!

@cpcpauls93

Are you sure about that? I would imagine finalists who are offered the Scholarship would then be offered admission, but I’m not sure being a finalist alone is sufficient for admission.

@wahoogrl08

“Finalists at the selection weekend are guaranteed admission to the University of Virginia regardless of the committee’s decision and those not offered a scholarship are provided a smaller, one-time monetary award.” [Jefferson Scholars Foundation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_scholarship#cite_note-7)
I appreciate it isn’t the most verified fact source, but wouldn’t mind going on that…

@YANKSFAN5

One can but hope… interview today, results soon

anyone else from the maryland/d.c. region? :]

I received a letter yesterday saying I was the alternate for the San Francisco Bay Area region finalist selection. What exactly does that mean?

Probably that if one of the finalists turns down their offer to go to selection weekend, then you will be invited.

which seems somewhat improbable, as they won’t find out for anywhere else until the week after

Has anyone heard from the Massachusetts/New Hampshire region yet? It seems like it is one of the last ones to release who is moving on and who is not. (I think its been almost three weeks since the interviews?)
