i heard the university was looking to accept more jews. how do they know an applicant is jewish if they do not ask the question on their application?

they cant. when a school is looking to "recruit" certain ethnic groups, the schools attempt to get out their names to areas that have a significant population of that group. for example, schools looking to increase their jewish populations go to college fairs/high schools in mass., conn., new york, and jersey

Are there many Jews at Vanderbilt, then? Do they face much discrimination? How about blacks and other minorities? Vanderbilt has a rep for being really "whitebread" and elitist.

If you search back, theres some threads already about Jewish life. In recent years, the Jewish population has greatly increased. There definitely isn't hostility between groups.

I'm not going to Vanderbilt, but one of the many factors that led me to apply there was a hilarious (slightly intoxicated) group of Vanderbilt people I met on an ElAl flight to Israel two years ago. They were all going on a Birthright program and and gave up lots of info about Jewish life at school...all of which sounded pretty cool, albeit a bit slurred.
