***JHU class of 2018 RD discussion thread***

Anyone else getting really nervous now that its only 17 days away? Im gonna die a couple of times in the next three weeks…

^um. yes me. i cant possibly wait…i am so inpatiet.

It seemed like they were pretty easy on the ED applicants for 2018 , but RD might be a lot tougher… :frowning:

March is literally the most nerve-racking month… I get anxious just thinking about when decisions are going to come out… Best of luck to everyone!! I hope we all get in :)

“It seemed like they were pretty easy on the ED applicants for 2018”

What does this even mean. It is a known fact that for ED the acceptance rate if higher than it is for RD, but that by no means means that the applicant pool isn’t as strong or as well qualified. I know very qualified people who were straight up rejected ED, not even deferred. This goes for all selective schools.

What I meant was that from looking at the Official JHU ED 2018 Results page, a lot of people got in with fairly decent stats even being Asian… I just feel like the RD round will be much, much tougher to get accepted but idk, I could be wrong

I’d not say they were “pretty easy on the ED applicants for 2018”. I do understand what you are saying. But I am sure everyone who was accepted ED had superb stats or was outstanding in some other way.

And as @JHU518 said, it’s always tougher RD.

when i went to the open house this spring they told me that they accept the same level of qualified students either ED or RD

What does “same level of qualified students” mean? Same amount of students? Same caliber?

ive heard that the percentage of people admitted ED is higher. And The early decision group will make up approximately 40 percent of the incoming class…at least last year. 17% is the regular admission rate while 36% is the ED admission rate. from the admissions blog: There is clearly a benefit to applying ED, and that benefit is the fact that an ED application proceeds through the review process with a more careful evaluation. Why is this? Well simple numbers — 1000+ applications read in a one month period of time versus 13000+ applications files, and since the ED applicants are signing a contract of their commitment, there is a strong sense that they deserve a careful evaluation.

The important final point about this discussion of advantage and benefit is to state clearly that the advantage is not an academic / competitive one. It is not “EASIER” to get into Hopkins ED — we do not lower our standards for ED students. With all our reads, whether ED or RD, we do not work with a set profile, a set grid, a set percentage of who we must take. The approach we take in evaluating a candidate in academic terms is the same no matter if the student applies ED or RD. We benefit from the fact that our ED applicant pool is in academic terms, quite similar to our RD pool.

It is easy to find out if there is an advantage applying ED from your school. Go to your school’s Naviance page and compare the stats for ED vs RD and see if there is a pattern. In general if you show commitment to attending any one university by applying ED, and be very vocal/passionate in your essays, then they will return the favor (provided all of your stats are in line). This kind of careful consideration is not going to be there for the RD pool.

@collagedad, Well, not every school has Naviance. In fact, I believe most don’t.

i was wondering about the ISIS jhu financial aid portal…what is it exactly? my financial aid wont show when i login thanks

I believe that you only get a financial aid package when and if you are admitted.

Well… only a week left :O

Less than a week. Thursday at 3 PM EST is the time, I believe.

^i think decisions are released on Friday (March 28).
