<p>Hello guys! I can't believe that there hasn't been a thread made for this yet- I often feel that the IVY's always get the attention :) Anyways, for all you Johns Hopkins applicants out there (like me!) feel free to post questions in this thread or any comments that you feel will be useful for others to know. With applications due in about a week, the pressure is really mounting but don't forget to de-stress! Happy applying and essay writing y'all!!</p>
<p>Hi! I’m going to apply- after not getting into my ED school :(</p>
<p>Hey! Applying Rd…although I sent my application in November, I think. Crazy-long essay, though. Hope nobody’s freaking out about it too much!</p>
Yo folks, could you check my essay out? Need it reviewed and proofread ASAP!
The air blessed with a harmonic mix of the sweet, the salty and the sour - the kitchen is where household artists prevail. There is, indeed, something strikingly similar between Biomedical Engineering and cooking. Both give you the freedom to express yourself, while being in sync with the established facts.
Whilst I’ve enjoyed volunteering to increase Road Safety, playing “Barbie” to put a smile on an underprivileged child’s face and trekking mountains in the wilderness, I’ve always had a deep-rooted, unparalleled interest in cooking! It’s the only hobby which ties my career goals.
Yet, I’ve never had the opportunity to embrace this passion.
I recall one cold morning; I woke up, a bit ahead of schedule, when I should have been snuggling up in bed, plotting how I would stop my fidgety cousins from getting a hold of the trophy I won for coming First in the Biochemistry Olympiad. It could have been that being the holiday season, my employers at Grad Connect and SideTackle decided that the number of articles that I’d have to contribute for the month be eased by a bit.
With my tummy rumbling for a bite and not a soul up to appease my hunger, I decided to cook breakfast. After all those years of watching Master Chef, I had the opportunity of recreating one of the dishes I had been resorted to only seeing in glossy cookbooks. As I befuddled myself on what I’d cook - from a meat pie to a sponge cake - I could hear the footsteps of my uncle coming towards the kitchen. We exchanged glacial looks, and then he mockingly gloated from the living room:
“Look everyone, Ishtiaque’s in the kitchen. He’s going to burn the whole house down if you all don’t come down!”
That is all it took. The whole battalion raced towards the kitchen to witness how big a “fool” I had made of myself. In Bangladesh, boys are not meant to cook. Men are only supposed to engross themselves in more “masculine” indulgences like painting the house or fetching the laundry.
At Hopkins, I would never have to think twice before pursuing activities beyond the classroom which would shape my future on the social field.
It is by excelling socially that I will be able to take maximum advantage of the education that I receive from Hopkins. This will allow me to become a complete individual, who understands the ethics that are involved with a task, rather than a person with a plethora of degrees only.
This will give me the glimmer of hope of working for some of the best pharmaceutical companies, like Amgen, in the globe and playing even a little part in making life-saving drugs and vaccines, which will help millions that has and will always, give me the superficial inner strength to succeed.
Hence, an education at Johns Hopkins University would give me the platform to excel both intellectually through my extracurricular activities and academically courtesy of the world-class faculty at JHU!
Oh, and what are my chances of admission?
SAT: 2100
SAT 2- Biology M 800, Chemistry 770 and Math 1 770
GPA: 3.98/4.00
Awards: Commonwealth Essay Competition Bronze, National Biochemistry Olympiad Champion, DofE (Bronze, Silver and Gold) to name a few
ECA: Writer at a few websites, Teacher of a school (4months), tutor etc.
Edexcel IGCSE: 7A*s, 3As and 1B
AS: 5As
I think your stats look pretty good for Hopkins in general, but I’ve heard that it’s good to have some demonstrated interest / involvement / proficiency in Engineering and Physics for the BME major. I don’t know much about the competitions you’ve won awards for or if they will suffice…
As for your essay, it’s interesting, but you should elaborate more on how you’ve developed or indulged in your hobby of cooking, especially if your family hasn’t been supportive of it… Also, don’t forget the part of the prompt that asks how you will indulge on your interests at Hopkins…
you should just see the essay as: “Why JHU?” that way you talk about academics and how their program is good for you. This way you answer their prompt and demonstrate interest in the simplest possible way!
probably shouldn’t post ur essay like that someone may copy
Has anyone received any confirmation from JHU that their app sent and whatnot?
Anyone willing to read my JHU supplement? I already submitted but I wanna know how good it was lol
i will if ya want
@VegasLiving
Hi everyone!! I applied RD to JHU as an international studies major and I absolutely love the school! just wondering, but is anyone else here a CTY alum??
CTY alum here, 12.2 and 13.2 at Lancaster. Also a JHU RD applicant. Best of Luck!
And American Pie is still High Holy Canon for me.
Hey guys so my SAT is 2250 and my uw GPA up to junior year was 3.93…i got 2 B+s in sophomore year cause my grandma passed away in korea and i couldnt travel back.
but now my senior year was REALLY hard and I’m probably getting 3 B+s…will that hhurt my chances alot?
Btw I go to a difficult private school and am top 10% out of 65 people
But Ik Jhu only calculates gpa up to junior year and then only looks at senior grades so…
Who gives a crap?
@iwantPRINCETON Although your situation is certainly not ideal, I wouldn’t worry too much because you haven’t drastically declined in academic performance. Personally, I believe junior year grades are the most important, but some people on CC would disagree.
By the way, how do you know that JHU only calculates GPA up to junior year?
hi all~~ did everyone who applied for RD receive their online application login??? i still haven’t received mine, and is this normally how long it takes??? should i email the admissions office about it?? what should i do??
@happi1997 I applied RD on December 26th, and I haven’t received anything about an online portal/login. I think we should just wait 2-3 weeks! The admissions office is probably overwhelmed .
This is what my email says:
Thank you for submitting your application to Johns Hopkins University. We look forward to reading your application and learning more about you. We will contact you via this e-mail address to let you know if anything is missing from your application.
Also be on the lookout for more information about accessing your decision. As the decision release date approaches, we’ll be sending a link to the decision release website along with specific instructions on how to log in and view admissions decisions.
I guess we don’t get any logins until decisions come around…like what Northwestern does…
^^That’s what I received as well
I did not receive the “Thank you for submitting your application” email as mentioned above! Of course I also haven’t received the login portal email either.
Anyone else in the same boat as I?
