Does anyone know anything about graduate JHU CS program? I do know that the admissions were quite competitive this year, but I don't have a slightest clue regarding masters program for CS at JHU.

What year are you in? What is your area of interest? My son is a CS major at JHU (currently a jr) and is thinking about doing the 5 year MS… I can ask him if he knows any grad students.

I am finishing undergrad this semester and most likely enrolling next fall. I have already been accepted to JHU, so I’ve been looking into the program.

The CS department at Hopkins is small (at least for undergrad) and not as high profile as like some other big engineering schools. However, my son has been happy with his preparation and with JHU overall. He has a google internship this summer and had an interview with microsoft as well.

The grad CS is very strong for information security, if that’s an area you are interested in.

How did you like UIUC? My son was accepted there but didn’t want to go that far from home. I have heard the department there is very strong. Did you consider applying there or did you feel like a change?

UIUC was great. If I had a choice, I would definitely choose UIUC again for undergrad. As for the CS department, UIUC is tops. If he got admitted to UIUC, he should consider, as most MS students are able to get funding by working with Professors. Placement into industry is very good also, most West coast companies such as Cisco, or Google heavily recruit at UIUC.

I personally did not apply to UIUC because I decided I wanted to experience something different. Although I have been accepted to MS programs at JHU, UMich, and CMU, I am leaning more towards JHU due to the attention the students seem to get.

I am not quite sure if I want to do a PhD, so I am really interested in industry placement. Also, I was not able to find graduate tuition for MS CS at JHU, except for tuition for engineering professionals program… Do you have any info regarding tuition?

I’m afraid I muddied the waters a bit. My S hasn’t done his grad school apps yet- will next yr unless he goes to industry. He was admitted to CS at UIUC as a freshman, but wound up going to Hopkins. I think he liked being a train ride away from home. I’ve always heard great things about the UIUC CS dept though, so I was curious about your experience there. I’m sure my S will check it out for grad school.

Great acceptances! You have three great possibilities. I think you’ll definitely have to tour the departments. Grad school is so different than undergrad from what I understand. Issues like whether a prof in the dept has the same research interests become more of a factor.

The next time I talk to my S, I will ask him if he has any insight into the situation.

As for tuition-- undergraduate tuition is huge, something like 40K. Don’t know about grad. Don’t they offer stipends and $ support for some programs?
