JHU-fantastic dream school or sure fallback?

This has really been bugging me so I just need some advice on it. After applying to 6 ivies, Stanford, Duke... I decided to "bring down the heat" so I don't create a gap year for my self. I applied to JHU as a fallback in case of.....no fantastic admissions situation. I also applied to a liberal arts college. However, look more closely at JHU.. It is beginning to seem more prestigious than it looked in November. I mean, it doesn't seem much like a fallback again...it looks more like a dream school though not on ivy level. Pls can someone give me a preview of my chances.. 2000 SAT......2100 SAT SUBJECT.......103 TOEFL...... 4.8/5.0 GPA..... head-boy of my secondary school... 6 other extra curricular activities with 4 community services....and good writing skills. Was applying to JHU the same as applying to Duke and the likes and do I have a sure banker??? Pls some info. Much appreciated. Thanks

What major are you applying to?
Regardless, though, JHU is by no means a safety or ‘fallback’. It’s been prestigious for much longer than last November  Yes, it is not an Ivy, but its admissions IS tough and selective (Duke-level? Yes. Even Ivy-level for certain majors). You are not choosing to ‘bring down the heat’ by applying to JHU. Find another safety. If you’re relying on JHU for guaranteed admission, then I think you have a high chance of being sorely disappointed (especially as you’re an international?)

I don’t know much about the stats, but you can look up collegedata and find out if you fall in the 25-75th percentile of JHU’s student stats. All I know is that a great deal of JHU’s applicants will have stats that are far more amazing, with lots of leadership roles/community service. I’ve heard that JHU’s students are very smart, well-rounded people which are by no means ‘less qualified’ than Ivy’s students.

Besides, I think you can search JHU’s acceptance rate and see that it only accepts 18.4% of its applicants. That should tell you something.

[I think there’s another thread of someone named Daniel who also planned to use JHU as a safety… lol]

Btw, Chuksky, why do you choose universities like Vandy and JHU as safeties? There are many other great engineering schools with higher acceptance rates! What about UIUC & Purdue?

They are not as selective as the Ivy League, but they are selective. Did you check the common data set? The 25th percentile for each section of the SAT is in the range of 640-670, meaning 75% of accepted students did better than that - and once can probably safely assume that few if any did less on all three sections. If your 2000 is equally distributed among the 3 sections, that places you right there - at the 25th percentile.

You also have to consider the pool of candidates at JHU, which may be a bit more self-selected than Ivy applicants, as the pool as a whole may be more qualified. They accept 20% of applicants - they are far from a sure fallback. Even your liberal arts college might not be a reliable fallback. You need a true safety school - not one you think you have a good shot of getting into, but one where you are assured of getting in, and that is affordable. What is the breakdown of your SAT score? Which subject tests did you take? (what were the individual scores? 2100 could be 700 on 3 exams or 500+ on 4).

I’m not sure where to post this question, so I will just ask here. I submitted my application on December 16, but have not gotten any confirmation from JHU. Every other school I applied to sent either an email or a letter and an online account to check the status of the app. Nothing from Hopkins. Has anyone else gotten anything? Thanks.

You only have a 2000 SAT and were thinking of JHU being a safety? Sorry but JHU is quite the reach for you. Don’t even get me going on the Ivies.

^ Basically

Unless you’re also a URM with fantastic essays, I wouldn’t have such a big head about the college application process. It’s a crapshoot for nearly everyone and as someone whose testing isn’t within the middle 50 percent, I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

A 2000 Sat? Sorry to crush dreams but unless you have a hook, you arn’t going to make it to any of the six schools + JHU you applied to. JHU is considered to be extremely selective-- especially so with internationals

the stupidity of this thread speaks volumes about your chances. ENROLLED students have an SAT of 1340-1520 on the old scale (on par with Duke and above certain ivies):

<a href=“For Media | Hub”>For Media | Hub;

Hopkins admitted students average 2250 on their SATs. Couple this with outstanding recs, extracurriculars, and other accomplishments, you likely wont be getting in if you’re this uninformed.

If your post is an indication of your ‘good writing skills’, then… eh.

Is it just me, or is this thread really annoying especially as thousands of other students are dreaming of JHU and this guy is considering it as a freaking ‘sure banker’??? I know you may be uninformed, OP, but this is simply… grah. One look at the uni’s overview stats will give away its level of selectivity. Did you not research beforehand??

…and as far as I know, their GPA criteria is getting even more stringent after the creation of superscore.

2200+ will give you a fair chance. below that you’re reaching, hard.

Thank you everyone for your advice. At least now I know where I stand. By the way, I have received my December SAT ( by mail) in my country, I had 2190. But again, thanks for your comments. Now I know my reaches. :-)

congrats on your very good December SAT score, Chuksy. that will only help but again JHU and Vandy are reach colleges. Nevertheless, your new SAT is a Plus! good for you. Don’t fail to take a hard look at good engineering colleges that are less selective. Some engineering colleges have good lines on jobs post grad and should not be neglected as options.

I assume you all got your emails ;D

“You only have a 2000 SAT and were thinking of JHU being a safety? Sorry but JHU is quite the reach for you. Don’t even get me going on the Ivies.”…This.

^???
