plus, its good to know JHU is a smaller more tight knit community than Duke, IMO....

Duke is a very very big uni compared to JHU... probably since its DIV 1 in all sports.

other than that, they both are good... maybe it might make a difference to you that JHU has an awesome Medical College ranked 2nd in the nation.. sounds appealing to me... heard its also a better environment as well... ive already made friends that applied and got accepted to JHU for class of 2012, and will be chillin with them in september hopefully- one of them george yang :P lol had to put it out there lol.

i tried making friends with some duke peeps, didnt work to well...

again my opinion LOL... dont have to value it at all just givin u a perspective from another person's point of view.

i visited jhu and hated it... the campus is not nearly as nice as duke... and durham does suck... but so does baltimore... it's not a big deal though...

in psych/neuroscience, i'm sure they are about the same academically... duke is a better overall school (not by much) and is MUCH more fun though...

the only reason i would consider JHU over duke is if i was in BME.... even then, i'd prolly pick duke...

I am sorry you think baltimore sucks - have you spent a lot of time there? Where are you from?

I lived in Baltimore in the early '70's when it really sucked, and I still loved it. We visit now (Mr. Bicoastal Mom got his BA and PHD from JHU oh and yes he is a neuroscientist) and can't believe how great B'more has become OK, maybe we are dated, but it takes a certain type of person to appreciate what Baltimore and JHU have to offer. Maybe, danielhstenis08 that is not you. So go to Duke and enjoy!

Heh, Fact is, 98.64% of the time you are in college, your sleeping, eating, drinking, studying, learning, and doing sports, literally everything you will do will be on campus. To be frank, if you do get into awesome schools such as JHopkins or Duke, you would be too busy studying to even care to go out to the city to actually enjoy. You will be busy. Its not like you are going out to the city every weekend. Once a month if your lucky. The other half the of the time would be hanging out in the community that is Hopkins or Duke.

There are some really bitter JHU students on here. I'd suggest to all to visit the campus instead of talking to losers who couldn't handle it at hopkins and probably didn't deserve to be there anyways.

Funny because I initially picked Hopkins over duke, penn, cornell and columbia. I still don't regret the decision and could have transferred anytime but chose to stay because i enjoyed the place. Its always the most antisocial and academically unsuccessful that ***** and moan about their time here.

I love it here, sure sometimes it gets rough. Hopkins is the kind of place where if you don't stay on top of things you'll get your ass kicked, I'm sure its like that at a lot of places, keeps me motivated.

As they say in real estate--location, location, location.

The reason they say that in real estate is because you're trying to buy a house. If we need a house, we'll definitely come find you. Unfortunately for the OP, he's just looking for a school in which case the campus will matter more than the city. If you've ever been on Duke's campus, you'll know that it's one of the nicest and most tranquil in the U.S. However while aesthetics are important, you definitely want to see how the school is in the area that you want to study. Generally speaking though, the quality of education at both of these schools are roughly equal and if you apply yourself, you could do great things at either institution.

Oh and...

There must be a lot of antisocial and academically unsucecessful people at JHU then because its definitely the school with the most complaints from students by far in my opinion. Second would have to be Cornell Engineering.

i think this thread says a lot in itself... go to the duke thread... we don't have arguments among students nor do u EVER see a duke student say something negative... the school pride is amazing... hopkins is a good school academically especially for medicine... unfortunately that's where it ends... ouch?

I tend to stay above the fray of obnoxious and immature discussion threads like this ... but I feel compelled to comment here.

Duke is a fantastic university.
Johns Hopkins is a fantastic university.
ENOUGH SAID.

If you attend either of these institutions you should pat yourself on the back for your past accomplishments, enjoy your time at these schools, and make the best of every moment.

Oh yeah and most importantly, DON'T CONCERN YOURSELF WITH THE OTHER SCHOOL. It boggles my mind why one who attends one school feels so compelled to trash another school that they have little to no knowledge about. Stick to commenting on what you know and stay constructive.

Coming on to these forums with an agenda to trash another school is just simply immature. And I am pretty confident that the students using these forums for advice and assistance will read right through posts from people who just feel compelled to be negative.

And for those looking to compare schools let me give you two pieces of advice:

(1) Make your own opinions. Do your own research. Visit each school. Make your own conclusions.
(2) When obtaining information about schools, question the source. Whose opinion is more valuable -- the student who attends the school OR the student who applied but chose to attend elsewhere OR the student who has visited a couple of times OR the students with "friends" who go there ... etc.

people ask for others' opinions for a reason... in the end, i would hope people decide for themselves, but there is nothing wrong with seeking opinions... i've seen you post multiple times that people need to decide for themselves... they REALIZE that

i'm just going to ignore your statement about not saying things that you don't know... i don't know how you could come to that conclusion... i know a lot about BOTH schools from doing my own research and visiting each...

but you are right about one thing... i should have stayed above this, and my posts were somewhat unnecessary...

"i'm just going to ignore your statement about not saying things that you don't know"

where exactly does he state that? I think you are inferring things that aren't there. And you're right. Your comments are baseless and ignorant. None of us go to another school's forum and start insulting the school. Theres no basis for it. And the ONLY opinions that are valuable are from students have gone to the school, not applicants and especially not applicants who may be bitter at not having gotten in.

see... the irony in ur statement is "your comments are baselss and ignorant," when in actuality, yours are. Open your eyes and do a little reading. I have seen multiple JHU students going onto Duke's forum in order to promote JHU which is exactly what I'm doing. How can you say that my comments are ignorant? They are just frank. Don't get mad at me for trying to help another student make the right decision, when your own students constantly put your school down. As HiWei responded when you ridiculed your own peers, "There must be a lot of antisocial and academically unsucecessful people at JHU then because its definitely the school with the most complaints from students by far in my opinion." Anyways, my purpose of posting on this "JHU VS. DUKE" thread is complete...

By the way, the original poster chose Duke ;)
