Swarthmore is a much better fit in terms of the student body and type of environment Im seeking (nerdy/geeky/intellectual/collaborative). However, JHU offers a major in creative writing and its only a concentration at Swat.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

JHU, any day, for Creative Writing!

At Swat, you’ll be like everyone else. At Hopkins, you’re more likely to get more attention.

for creative writing, JHU hands down.
i love the community/family feel of the major

Definitely Swarthmore. It’s a liberal arts school and gives you a better overall education. JHU is mostly science/engineering oriented and even though they have recently made strides enhancing their humanities/english departments, it still falls way short of what swarthmore and other top liberal arts schools have to offer.

“recently made strides enhancing their humanities/english departments”. ??? JHU was ranked #2 (Iowa was #1) in creative writing by USNWR rankings in 1997. The English and History departments have ranked among the top for many years. As I said above however, the OP should go where he feels he fits best and if that is at Swathmore he’ll get a fine education there.

To add one more thing to this thread, Swarthmore does not have anything more than a concentration in Creative Writing. If you wanted to take more classes, you would have to go to Bryn Mawr College or UPenn. How important is Creative Writing to you? If you have to have the major, skip Swarthmore altogether. I would be majoring at Swarthmore (or Bryn Mawr) right now if the major was available. Since it’s not, however, I am looking into transferring to a place that has it; Johns Hopkins is one of the schools on my list.

“At Swat, you’ll be like everyone else. At Hopkins, you’re more likely to get more attention.”

Can you elaborate on your logic, or lack thereof, here?

I wasn’t quite sure what was meant either.

lol well what they meant was that at hopkins when you’re a humanities major (anything outside of science/math) the departments tend to be much smaller student population wise. you stand out as a creative writing or film media studies major at hopkins.
you have amazing professors serving a much smaller student population…you get more personal attention.
