Johns Hopkins University v. Haverford College

Hi,

I am completely stuck between Johns Hopkins and Haverford College with only a week left to decide. Any insight on either would be great! I am interested in double majoring in Econ and Creative Writing. I like the environment at Haverford, but not sure if I like that bryn mawr students can take classes at haverford and vice versa. Is it hard to get classes because of that? I also like that students have close relationships with professors at haverford. Does anyone know anything about student-professor relationships at Johns Hopkins? I love JHU’s creative writing program, but worried about the “cut throat” nature hopkins student are rumored to have. Thank you so much for any response and advice!

I have a hard time believing cut throat students do not exist in creative writing and since the department is very small - you would definitely have close professor relationships. JHU rumors are just that. Did you visit campus? JHU does have the more established reputation for wall street and jobs. But Haverford would feel smaller.

I’m not sure how the Bi-Co relationship works but I would THINK that Haverford students get first pick. I can’t be too sure. It boils down to do you want the small environment or the big environment?

Just wanna say that I visited JHU and didn’t get the cutthroat vibe at all. People are competitive with themselves - as in, they want to succeed, but hey don’t sabotage others in order to do it! I know that JHU has like the #2 writing sems major in the country, so the quality of education there is really phenomenal if writing is something you’re into. Also, I’ll be at JHU and that makes it totally worth it
Keep in mind that Haverford and JHU are totally different environments. I was deciding between Swarthmore and JHU, and once I visited Swarthmore, I realized I would feel so constrained at such a suburban, tiny, school.
