So it's basically come down between these 2 schools for me...which one would you go to? Leaning toward Loyola a bit just because Baltimore has to be way better than Harrisonburg, but other than that they both seem fine. Loyola is also much more expensive but I haven't gotten the financial aid notice yet so I don't know how much it'll end up being. JMU just gave me loans and im OOS so it's not exactly cheap... Anyways, which school would you pick if you were me and why?
PS. I'm probably majoring in communications and both schools have good departments so that's out of the quotient.

anyone have any ideas?

The schools are so different in terms of size, location, campus feel... I do not think that someone else's reasons for picking one school over another will be super helpful to you.

Do you want a small, private college in a bigger city or are you looking for a larger, public university in a smaller city (Harrisonburg is actually classified as a city... although after living in NYC for a while, I smile whenever I pass the sign that says I live in the city of Harrisonburg :)).

I teach at JMU and I can say that the students who are are seem happy to be here. The students I work with are involved in many extra-curricular activities, and do not seem to be sad that Harrisonburg is not a major metropolis. However, the students who are here choose to be here, so being at a school in a city may not have been a top priority on their list.

I suggest making a pros and cons list, and then going with your gut (and financial aid packages, if the financial concerns are important on your list).

Good luck!

Thanks for the input. One side of me thinks it would be great to go to a school in a smallish town and just have my life be the school, then the other part of me thinks it would be fun to be in a city. Soo hard. Well I'm visiting Loyola next weekend so hopefully that will help me to make up my mind.

I feel like JMU is so much more fun than Loyola. Here's what other people tell me that attend both schools:

JMU - The campus is beautiful, it's safe, that students are very involved, food's great, professors are great, and even though it's not in the most exciting place...you don't need to leave campus that often because the social scene is always fun. These are smart kids that work hard and play hard.

LOYOLA - It's near Baltimore, which isn't the nicest area although there is a lot more going on. The sports scene is limited, but the social life is pretty good. However, student involvement isn't as pronounced. Oh, and dorms are apparently huge.

Visiting definitely helps! Good luck with your decision. Talk to current students and see if you like them and want to get to know them.

thanks for the help. one more question- is the school of media arts at JMU supposed to be good?

yes, very.

thank you =)
