Hello,

how is the music program (in particualr the voice program) at JMU?
What are some good/bad things? Any information is greatly apprecoated!

The other school son my list are-
Catholic Unibersity
University of Maryland
University of Delaware

I have gotten in all these school's vocal perfomance program and currently tryting to decide which one to attend.
What should i know? What do you all think?

My D is a freshman VP major at JMU. She loves it there - she is getting lots of performance experience - no lead roles (and she wouldn’t expect that as a freshman), but she was in the opera chorus in the fall and is in the chorus for opera scenes this spring. This production is a mix of Musical Theater and classical so she’s having fun dancing and singing in a couple of MT scenes. They will perform once at school and once in a nearby town. Her chorale sang at the Kennedy Center at the end of March. She recently organized a community service trip to a local nursing home where she and 5 other students sang for a great audience. That was good experience too. The music kids are a really close group - lots of support. The teachers get along and work together for the kids - no drama. They have a new voice teacher coming in the fall.

My D looked at Delaware, but she felt JMU"s program was stronger - and JMU is cheaper. She loved Delaware’s campus though. She talked to some people about Catholic but the feeling she got was that they were starting to focus more on musical theater. Expense factored in there too. University of Maryland has a wonderful program but the people she talked to who went there didn’t recommend it for undergrad. They felt it was too easy to just slip through the cracks since the grad program is so big. It will be high on her list for grad school though. The school is also bigger than she wanted. Good luck with the decision.
