i'm having a real hard time finding a doctor who is willing to be shadowed. the best i can do is the hospital which has one day out of the year where about 100 kids can shadow in the physical therapy dept. however this is iffy because i'm not 16 yet. so i was thinking of shadowing my dad who is a human resources manager at a consulting firm. my logic behind that is that human resource skills will def. come in handy when in doctor-patient scenarios. does this sound reasonable? will it look bad to colleges that i shadowed a family member?

anybody there?

I think shadowing an actual doctor would be more beneficial for you than shadowing your dad in human resources at a consulting firm. The shadowing experience from shadowing a doctor shows you have interest for medicine and so forth. What state do you live in? Maybe I can help you.

I live in Illinois in a subarb of Chicago. a lot of doctors here are worried about the HIPPA privacy laws. Also Illinois is having a hard time keeping doctors because of malpractice insurance also. I don't know how to find doctors willing to have a highschool student around their office.

I'm not sure if this is what your looking for, but here in Missouri, there is this program which I am shadowing through - Mid-Mo AHEC.

psh ya i got jipped with the HIPPA thing too, but i took all the courses cause im in EMS so i got around it ;)

asbstar....
Find a area in medicine and learn quite abit about it. Then contact a doctor in that field via email expressing your interest. I was able to work with a cardiothoracic surgeon for a relatively long period of time in the OR. Doctors are unwilling to be troubled by someone with absolute no knowledge in their field.

ctsurgery, how was your experience shadowing the cardiothoracic surgeon? I'm actually going to be shadowing a ct surgeon next week, for a day. When you initially contacted him/her, was your experience intended to be for a day and then extended longer because of the interest you showed? I am hoping that's what will happen to me, because I am really interested in surgery and the more time I get to spend shadowing the better.
