Jobs after U Chicago

How easy is it to get a job after graduating from U Chicago? I have gone to the career advancement site, but I find the numbers unhelpful, so I hope to hear from some current/recently graduated students.

What kind of job? In what field? Where? What connections have you made? What were your grades? Who can you rely on for recommendations? What is the economy doing? What impression do you make in job interviews?

In other words, it depends on so many different things – some of which are particular or peculiar to you, and some of which will affect more people more generally – that it is difficult or impossible to answer you with any precision. I think one can safely say that it is probably no more difficult or easier to get a job from the U of C than it would be from any other top college. But beyond that…

I understand that many factors influence this, but I am wondering whether, for the most part, do people who want jobs get jobs?

Of the 4 roommates the two that looked for jobs found them immediately after graduation. The two that continued in academia went on into very selective programs.

Yes, if you want a job, you’ll get one, likely before you graduate. Of course it is harder for some people than others, and you may have to compromise on what sorts of jobs you are looking at (no art history major should apply only for gallery positions, for example), but that’s how it goes.

I only know of one person in my most immediate circle who hasn’t been successful at all with her job search, and that’s because she’s looking for a job in a very narrow field where you basically can’t get a job unless you have an MA. (Also, she’s not nearly as good at systematic job searching, i.e. sending out 1-2 applications a day, every day, until you get an interview).

S1 and long time GF, both attended Chicago, both with great jobs, both felt having attended Chicago led to those jobs (but who knows?).
