Jobs at Amherst

Is it easy to get a part time job on campus or in downtown Amherst while attending UMass?

Yes, it’s easy! You can get a license (expensive training and actual license is paid for I think) to drive the buses, work in the dining commons, the hotel, the library or at on off campus store and so on. The pay usually isn’t terribly good but it’s something to help offset some costs. Here is an obvious resource: [UMass Amherst: Financial Aid Services - Students can find jobs here!](http://www.umass.edu/umfa/seo/)

^Is this true even if you dont qualify for the work study program?

Yes. My son, for example, works for the huge food service operation. But, many of the work study jobs seem more interesting, such as tutoring in the local school systems. If you’re not work study, they’ll let you volunteer for that.

My S has a job on campus in the Learning Resource Center, working as a tutor. This is not work-study.

You can’t do this as a freshman, and you have to taken the class and have the grades to prove you’ve mastered the classes you are tutoring in, but it’s a pretty easy job. No heavy lifting. :)

OK, thanks guys, good stuff to know.

@latichever; do you know what the hourly wage is for a job like that? I’d assume $8-10/hr

how do you go about getting a job as a tutor @ umass? Since I am a transfer I think it would be okay because all of classes transfer which means they are roughly equivalent to umass’s courses. I’ve been wanting to tutor in biology

^ Basically you fill out an application and give them a copy of your transcript.

In some jobs, NOT being work study can work in your favor. Let’s say you’re qualified for $1500 of work study. Some bosses will cut you off once you’ve hit that amount, as they prefer to only pay you out of Uncle Sam’s pocket, not from their budget. That happened to one of my kids.

Another kid was able to work well beyond their work study limit, as they needed her to cover shifts, regardless of where her pay came from.

@gronkspike around $8.25.
