Jobs for Freshman

I know that there is a sign up period for students. However, I was wondering if any of you current Cornell students recommend 1st semester freshman getting jobs on campus? (btw I don't have a work-study, but I am CPRS)

...anyone know about this stuff?

If you are CPRS, you will be doing research already, and perhaps you want to hold off on a job until you get on your feet with that and the coursework, etc.
There is no 'sign-up' period for students; there is a website called Student Employment (I can't think of the URL, just search for 'student jobs' at the Cornell site and it will come up- you need to sign into Kerberos/NetID to access it) that lists pretty much every student job. It's like the real world- you apply, usually submit a resume, etc. It's a little daunting if you've never applied for a job before (I speak for myself here, you probably have loads of experience), but it's good practice for life. It makes you feel more accomplished that way, lol.

Just so you know, I had to take 2 jobs the entire year last year (my freshman year) and it worked out quite well. I enjoyed making the spare change and it really opened some doors for me at Cornell.
Any more questions you have on it, feel free to post or PM me. :)

can I access kerberos from home, or can I only access it from Cornell (I have downloaded it off of bear access and everything)

You can access the site from home. Personally my computer doesn't use the tickets (Kerberos) system at home, it only works at Cornell. However, the same secure sign-in thing that works with your email will happen at the student jobs site.

yes you can get into uportal/kerberos when off campus. there is a campus jobs section on uportal. if you are computer savvy and want a nice cushy job helping people with computers a few times an hour with very flexible schedule, ask in the library about CL3 when you get on campus.

Are there jobs available for internationals? How much do jobs pay on average? Can one be a tour guide freshman year and get paid? If anyone knows, I'd love to hear the answers to these questions.

Yes - like I said, anyone can apply for a job. The only requirements are specific skills that the position may want (certain programming or language skills) - it's like any other job search. One can apply to be a 'tour guide' (it's actually a Campus Information/Visitor Relations or CIVR Specialist) at any year - although I know many, many freshman who applied (including myself) who didn't get it... as far as I know, they will interview to the first or second round a freshman, but they will usually only take sophomores and above.
Any more questions, feel free to leave/PM :)

If you need a work permit due to international visa status, are the jobs usually accomodating? Or is needing a work permit something that hurts you when looking for jobs?

Also, how many hours do people usually work and what's the pay like?

I refer you to this about the paperwork and eligibility: <a href="http://www.sws.cornell.edu/SES/home.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.sws.cornell.edu/SES/home.htm</a>
If you click on the Verification Form, it will give you more details.

Everyone works different hours - from a few hours to 12-15 hours/week. I personally worked 14 hrs first semester and 10 hrs second semester, and it worked out fine. For me, it was just finding a job that I really enjoyed.
The pay will be anywhere from $6.75 to $16, as listed here: <a href="http://www.sws.cornell.edu/SES/JAWS.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.sws.cornell.edu/SES/JAWS.html</a>
However, you'll find most starting jobs go between $6.75-$7.50, with a few here/there higher. Most jobs are found by looking online or talking to people or going to where you want to work and asking (ie. the libraries)

If I made less than minimum wage here CT I'd CRY. (make $10 now)
