When looking for an internship, do you think recruiters put more value into the individual program's prestige or the overall school's prestige? How about when looking for a job?

Depends on the career field. Sometimes the reputation of the specific program is what matters. Sometimes it isn’t.

I think in engineering program/major/department prestige matters a lot, and a lot more than overall school prestige (e.g. Purdue is a great engineering school, and for engineering would probably hold a lot of weight).

In other fields, it would depend. Many students aren’t getting jobs directly related to your major, and 2/3 of your coursework in other majors are taken outside of the major department. So the overall reputation of your university is going to be really important, too. This is especially true in finance/consulting/banking.
