I'm a junior in high school and interested in engineering, however my passion is with culture and language. I want to find a job that I can find in different countries after some years of experience in the US. Chemical, computer, and petroleum engineering are a few of the majors that caught my attention, but not restricted to. I'm planning on getting certified to teach English as a second language so I can make money that way as well. Also, when I say travelling, I mean to actually live in a foreign country for a long time, immersing myself in the culture and learning the language, then after a while I'll move on to another. I'm not looking for jobs that will send me on a project and I'll come back after a short period of time of just working. Are there any engineering jobs/majors that can make this work? This is my one dream and I want to do everything I can to make it a reality.

Almost any branch of engineering can offer some opportunities to work in a foreign country. Choose the branch of engineering that you find most interesting. You always do better if you like what you’re doing and doing well in a field will open up more opportunities for you.

Do be aware that doing engineering in a foreign language will always present some additional challenges for you. Nothing that will block you from doing it, but challenges none the less. Engineering terms and phrases are usually beyond the usual language classes. It is important that you can get your ideas across in “engineering speak” as communicating ideas and concepts accurately is oh so important to successful engineering. I am not good at foreign languages but have worked on some projects with international partners. Communication across languages was sometimes a barrier.
