At my age of 15, the only job available to me in my area is at a grocery store. Would it look bad to selective colleges if I decided to work at a grocery store? Is any work experience, regardless of where, looked upon favorably?

I just wanted to add, my parents REALLY bother me. They don’t want me working at any grocery store, fast food joint, clothing store, etc. because they think if I do work at places like that, I will also end up working at places like that as an adult. That’s really the stupidest and most illogical argument I’ve ever heard.

Haha I currently work at my church and my technical job title is a “custodial assistant” AKA I take out trash and clean windows… But I was accepted to 3 ivies and waitlisted at another. So I’d say it certainly doesn’t hurt you. I’d also strongly assume showing you have the initiative to work at all will be a plus no matter where you apply.

Work is a plus. It means that you can show up on time, deal with other people, take orders and file a tax form.

I work 20-30 hours a week at a grocery store. Not only that, it is my primary EC. Work experience is actually a plus on applications. However - be careful how much you make (it can effect your EFC, which is a problem if you are in the 0-1000 range) and don’t make it your primary EC unless you have a legitimate reason for it to be so.
