John Jay vs. Carman

Let the first-year housing debate commence.

I know it may seem premature to be worrying about this, but it’s been on my mind. I’ve been trying to weigh the pros and cons for John Jay vs. Carman, but I still can’t decide. When I did my overnight visit, I stayed with someone staying in Carman, and I absolutely loved it! The view was great and the 4:1 ratio of the bathrooms was really nice as well. On the other hand, the opportunity for freshmen to have their own rooms is quite rare! Any current Columbia students, or anyone else that more knowledgeable about this, want to give some insights?

Yay! CC '14!!!

i’ve been worrying about housing too. there’s also furnald and LLC, right? i’ve read all the of each of them, but i still can’t decide. i want a good washroom, one that i don’t have to share with too many people, and a social dorm but preferably a single. i heard the elevators break down a lot…

JJay ALL THE WAY!

SEAS '14!

LLC is the way to go then.

My experiences at Carman have been great.

JJ for me as well.

Also in SEAS.

Probably Carmen for me… I need social-ness.

Carman and John Jay are probably just as social. I live in Carman, but my friends in John Jay have really tight-knit floors and plenty of friends. I personally really enjoy my 4-person suite and I love my suitemates. Private bathrooms is also a huge plus.

I read about dorms on the Wiki (don’t know how reliable that is) but JJ way at the top in the 15th floor sounded kinda cool. a) would I have any say in what floor, and b) is 15th floor actually cool, or just a pain?

so, if i sign up for housing, am i most likely to get a single or double?

JJ ftw!!

i was researching and apparently 70% of all freshmen get their first choices. columbia has TONS of single options. deciding between furnauld and jj…

Well there are pros and cons to 4:1 bathrooms:

PROS:
-no (less) random drunk vomit
-accountability for who messes it up

CONS:
-waiting time for the shower
-if you need to take a big dump, go elsewhere

I’m actually on the same floor as “thebeef” and I must say, Carmen is definitely the best freshman dorm. It’s really social in the sense that within about a week, you will have gotten to know everyone on the floor (about 54) on a personal level. Everyone’s doors are always open, and if a 4:1 people to bathroom ratio isn’t enough, there’s always the one in your neighbor’s suite!

I have been waitlisted…But, if I do get accepted by God’s Grace, I will try for John Jay…Its the best…

I picked Carmen, because I think that having a roommate is a part of the freshman experience- singles are for grad students! I hope I get a room with a view though.

…says who?
