I was hoping for some insight into a variety of aspects of Johns Hopkins life as a graduate student from current/recently graduated students.
Academic
Can anyone speak to the difficulty of the BME MS program? I’m specifically interested in the Medical Device courses. I’ve heard that their undergraduate program is very intensive, which I would expect for 4 years of engineering school at a top program whilst building that engineering foundational courses and transitioning to college education. I’m curious if that stands true for their Master’s program as well? Is the grading rough? I’m looking for a graduate education thats very dedicated to making sure you learn the hands-on skills of being an engineer and is project based, rather than majorly assessment based. I feel that the former would better prepare me for industry. An education that really connects the classroom to real-life experience.
Baltimore
I’m not familiar with Baltimore in the slightest. What can you tell me about Johns Hopkins location within Baltimore? How far is it from downtown? What is the surrounding area like? What is the main means of public transit, is there a subway system or is busing the main way to get around?
Campus + Housing
Where do most graduate students live? I’m planning to try to get somewhere as close to campus as possible, but that being said I don’t want to be living in off campus housing that is essentially an undergraduate dorm. Also, I’d be BME so I also would want to be living on the side of campus closest to the engineering buildings—however, I don’t know which buildings are the BME/engineering buildings so any info on that would be great!
Social Life
What is Johns Hopkins like socially for a graduate student? Do people go into Baltimore a lot to grab drinks? Are people living in the library like I’m told life is like for JHU undergraduates? Are the graduate clubs active? Anyone that has experience transitioning to JHU for graduate school, I’d be very interested to learn your experience!
Thanks!
