Hi everyone, thanks in advance for those who respond to this. I'm a senior in high school and am looking to study international relations/international studies/foreign affairs in college. I have narrowed my top choice down to Georgetown and Johns Hopkins. I believe I'm a better "fit" at Hopkins, but through my own research and reading many comments on this website, it seems like Georgetown has a better undergraduate program for IR/IS/FR. Any thoughts?

JHU is heavily focused on graduate research. In fact, they were the first US school to follow the “research university” model. They were set up that way from the beginning - they initially considered, but never actually adopted, a graduate research only approach.

Hopkins actually has one of the best IS majors in the country and it’s also one of the most popular majors here. My roommate is an IS major and she absolutely loves it! At the same the, Georgetown does have an incredible IS program. With the two programs being so comparable, I think it might be better if you looked at other aspects of each school: geography, surrounding location, internship opportunities, public transportation, etc. Hope this helps!

Apply to both. They’re both incredibly selective, so you’d better hedge your bets :)

Both are great schools, JHU has better overall ranking but Georgetown SFS is top when it comes to IR.

Both are stellar schools with incredible programs- you’re better off going where you feel you fit vs. the “higher ranked program”, because you really can’t go wrong.
