Johns Hopkins: time to thin out the PhD herd

<p>Good to see that at least some prestigious universities are taking proactive measures to address the glut within the labor market in the sciences. </p>

<p>Johns</a> Hopkins plans to lower Ph.D. enrollment and raise grad student stipends.</p>

<p>This is the state of reality of employment in many of the sciences: never ending post-docs and low pay in academia, and a dearth of opportunities for newly minted scientists in industry.</p>

<p>I agree- When you have PhDs not being able to find jobs, you know you’ve got too many of them.</p>

<p>I was going to apply for a PhD awhile back. Then, I looked at these forums and noticed the poor career prospects and how my friends were struggling I changed my mind in a quickness.</p>
