Johns Hopkins VS. Cornell?

I know this question has been asked before but I wanted new perspectives.

So I have a pretty good shot at both colleges and if I were attending, I would most likely be in Arts & Sciences. Since these two colleges are my #1(s), I plan on ED-ing to one of them but I can't decide!!! Help?

I want to go to a top medical school after graduation and right now my ED choice depends on which college will provide the best opportunity in order for that to happen.

Any thoughts? Which one would you choose and why?

Thanks(=

The campuses of those schools are totally different, I would visit both and see which I preferred since they are both excellent schools.

coco, academically and in medical school admissions they are more or less equally good, but as bandgeek points out they are totally different in ambience on just about every level.

Have you visited? Surely one or the other must be more to your liking. You will do best where you are happiest.

And just as another caveat, pre-med at JHU is completely cutthroat and competitive from what I hear. May be better off securing a sound gpa and a more relaxed undergrad experience elsewhere.

JHU places way more students at the top medical schools and has a much smaller student body. Of course, that in and of itself doesn’t show that JHU is a better school for pre-med. JHU might just have more applicants.

Also, don’t both schools have a reputation for being cutthroat and competitive?

The question is, will you get a higher GPA at Johns Hopkins or Cornell?

I can’t necessarily answer for Cornell. I’d assume yes, but I’m from the Baltimore area, know a lot of students at JHU, and was accepted…the nature of it’s academics and student body was definitely a deterrent.

There is only 1 thing different about JHU and Cornell. JHU is located in downtown Baltimore with slumps right next to campus, although the campus is beautiful. I know, ironic huh? Well, as long as you don’t step off campus, you wouldn’t be mugged/shot. Cornell is located in Ithaca and also has a beautiful campus but ITHACA? When’s the last time you heard of ITHACA? probably 2 seconds ago. Also, you’ll be in complete isolation for 4 years because of ITHACA (question mark face).

In terms of med school admissions, both schools brag of ~70% med school admittance %tage as long as your GPA is decent (3.5+?).

Yes, my thought exactly.

I forgot to add, both schools are very competitive, but not cutthroat. There is no such thing as cutthroat. The only viable definition of a cutthroat person is a person who wrecks harm and destruction for personal gain. While high school students can fantasize about this happening at JHU or Cornell (i’ve done this many times), this simply is not true because being “cutthroat” will probably get you suspended or expelled in college. JHU and Cornell students are simply competitive in that when you think you’ve tried hard enough, other students will have tried harder.

You’re not entirely correct about the location of JHU. You’re right that certain areas directly adjacent to campus are nasty, but in other directions you walk directly into Guilford, one of the most historically wealthy and beautiful areas in the Baltimore area. It’s no more dangerous than any other college campus in my opinion. But again, visit and judge for yourself.

Ithaca is a pretty big place actually and many people have heard of it before.

Ever hear of Montauk or Sag Harbor? Neither is a huge city but they’re amazing place to be.
