Johns Hopkins vs. Northeastern

I was admitted to both schools and given very significant packages (scholarship + grant aid). As everything stands, finances are not an issue. I’m more concerned about my fit at both schools.
I plan on studying Computer Engineering, and while I am well aware of Hopkins’ prestige, I wonder about how my undergraduate experience might pan out there. I’m a very social person and have a “work hard play hard” mentality. I fear that Hopkins, while having great name value, is going to be a depressing place. I know it’s a research heavy school, but I don’t plan on going into grad school and I’m not huuuge on research. Plus, Computer Engineering co-ops at Northeastern are nothing to scoff at.
I have yet to visit Hopkins but I’d like to hear what you guys think. Northeastern seems like a better fit, but I was very lucky to get into Hopkins and don’t want to feel like I missed a great opportunity. Thanks!

Northeastern is a pretty serious place too.

Anyone else with any thoughts?

I think the key will be for you to visit Hopkins. Until then, your fears are just in your imagination. How soon can you get there in person?

Northeastern ranks higher than Johns Hopkins for Computer Engineering and the co-op is a definite plus. Hopkins is a great school but seems more research oriented.

@CardinalBobcat I will be attending SOHOP (their 2-day accepted student fest where you get to stay in a current student’s dorm) April 10-11, so I have a week and a half to marinate before visiting. I really look forward to it though, it seems like it’ll be the deciding factor.

@pieferdays Oh wow, I wasn’t aware of that. Do you think a Northeastern Computer Engineering degree is more respected than a Hopkins one?

I’m glad to hear that you will be able to go visit and do a weekend.

My DD was very impressed with JHU and found the students were some of the most friendly and laid back of the reach schools we visited.

That said, if you aren’t planning on going to grad school, I think Northeastern is going to have more support for career readiness.

Great options! Enjoy your weekend!

@marcerino I think it will make an employer consider you more prepared for the job market and get you in the door faster.

@momofsenior1 That’s a relief to hear. I hope I get similar impressions when I visit!

@pieferdays That’s exactly what I’m thinking, considering I don’t plan on going to Grad school. This is gonna be a tough choice…

Does anybody with insight on Hopkins Engineering know about interning opportunities at the school? Career-readiness is definitely something I’m weighing heavily

Can you tell us which school you decided to attend?

Hey all,
Funnily enough, I was caught in a very similar situation. In my case, I was majoring in Computer Science. I ultimately decided on Northeastern, largely due to the co-op program. The decision itself was akin to being ripped in half, and its still hard to say whether I made the right choice or not :). At the end of the day, they’re both great schools I suppose.
