Joining Clubs at UF?

How important are these for prospective employer?

Lets say your a finance major at UF and you join the SIC (student investment club) do you think it's worthless? or to some extent it looks good? Not to mention that you would also have to have an internship plus your were part of something in the school that relates to your major.

Now if you were in a club that you were frisbee king i could see that not helping at all. But what about someting that pertains to your major?

Any inputs?

Thanks,

being a member of a student organization is a meaningless thing to put on your resume. unless you actually gain something that you can talk about from it, employers won’t care.

that said, a lot of academic/professional oriented organizations (especially in the business college) are okay for networking, and particularly useful at ensuring you’re informed about upcoming events which are relevant to your interests.

so don’t join clubs just to pad your resume because recruiters know better. if you don’t have any responsibilities in the organization that allow you to accomplish anything, or if the organization isn’t particularly enjoyable or informative, then its not worth your time.

Certain Greek letter societies (of the honor society type, not fraternities or sororities) may be professionally useful. Or, as aforautumn said, if you hold a leadership position and gain relevant skills then it may be worth mentioning.
