...but from numerous accounts (ncluding an info session with ad com we attended at Columbia this past July, and the recent experience / understanding of my D's teacher, who received his BM, MM and DMA all from Juilliard), I have heard that students in the Columbia-Juilliard exchange opportunities are so rare that it is somewhat misleading to call it a "program". As I recall, there were also some posts about this in the Columbia forum last year, including from several students who were accomplished musicians and investigated the possibility both before and after matriculating.

Well, the information above comes directly (cut and paste) from Columbia's web site and Columbia calls them programs.

The reason for the post, (in addition to answering the original question of the thread), was that the anecdotal accounts failed to recognize the fact that there were two distinct programs.

The exchange is not a degree program and states up front only 4-6 students would be admitted and that even separate acceptances into both schools would not guarantee acceptance into the exchange. Clearly there are not going to be a lot of participants here.

As for the joint degree program, I haven't a clue how many Columbia grads apply for Masters programs in music. But, if they are so inclined AND can gain acceptance to Juliard's graduate school, there is a program in place to gain both degrees in 5 years. Columbia has several such programs in other fields including with its own law school.

Applying to Columbia with the expectation of participating in either program would seem rather optimistic.

I don't know anybody attempting a double major with Columbia or another school. My S had a friend who had an injury that prevented her from playing her instrument for several semesters. She remained enrolled at Juilliard, but took classes at Colombia. I don't know if she intends to use those classes toward a double major -- but her music degree is going to be taking her longer than 4 years due to the injury.

A number of schools have programs allowing you to pursue two degrees or other majors within a BM... ones I know of are: Northwestern, McGill, Oberlin, BU
Conservatories with programs are: Tufts/NEC, Harvard/NEC, Columbia/Juilliard
