If my ED acceptance didn't say anything about being a Joseph Wharton Scholar, does that mean I didn't make it? Also, do they even offer it to ED admits, or is it just a way to encourage RD admits to attend?

There are extra tabs on the acceptance page for the Ben Franklin Scholars program and Joseph Wharton Scholars program if you “make it”, so I guess not. That’s not really the right way to look at it though. The program is meant for students with academic interests in the liberal arts (apparently), so it’s not like they take the “top” (whatever that means) 30 students and that’s that.

I don’t know if it’s offered to ED admits, but on CC people have described it as a RD recruitment tool. Even if it IS a recruitment tool, there are some very good perks so it might be worth applying in the spring.

I don’t know if it’s changed since I was accepted, but I got in ED, but didn’t find out about JWS until when RD decisions came out.

My friend got in ED to CAS last year, and she was invited into the Benjamin Franklin Scholars program in April–after all the decisions were made.

So…just wait! ^^

My bad. I applied RD.

The liberal art stuff is bs from what I see. It’s more of a recruitment tool imo.

How many people are annually accepted into the JWS program as freshmen?

If you mean JWS, less than 30 kids per year. BFS gets significantly more though --just can’t put a number on it, sorry.

Thanks so much.
And by the way, do Joseph Wharton Scholars have advantages over others if they apply to the MBA Sub-matriculation program?

I would imagine that they don’t get any special treatment beyond the inclusion on their transcripts that they were in the program. Btw, don’t aim to submatric. I looked into it and it’s near impossible. Not by difficulty, by circumstance.

There are some perks to it though. NY alumni dinner, invitation to special stuff not marketed otherwise, etc.

I was just attracted by the MBA submatriculation program at Penn.
Is the admission that hard?
Do you know anyone on the program?

(Sorry very much for being off the topic of Joseph Wharton Scholars!)

Yes, it is hard. They take around 6-10 students per year.

actually, based on the presentation this fall, 1/7 got in. The deal breaker is:

“How do you, an undergraduate who has never been out in the real world, know that you need an MBA?”

Correct Answer: “My family’s multi-million dollar company has it in its constitution that only an MBA can be CEO.”

maybe that’s because only 50 applied; maybe the denominator is that low because people know already how hard it is to get in.

Unless you have a really REALLY good reason (i.e. pre-existing amazing business connections) to get an MBA straight after undergrad, you will be rejected by all the top programs.

^^ exactly. And from what I understand, the 7 that applied had 3.8+ GPA, etc.

If you are adamant about not going into the workforce after undergrad, go for the law submatric. The admission there is much better (though it’s a self-selected group too)
