I am planning to pursue a master's degree in broadcast/online journalism and need to decide between three schools. The choices are: USC (Annenberg), UC Berkeley (North Gate), and Syracuse (Newhouse). Ultimately, I would like to pursue a career in sports journalism after obtaining my degree. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Syracuse. While Berkeley and USC are ranked higher than Syracuse overall, Syracuse's Newhouse school is by far the best of the three. Additionally, the sports journalism program at SU is probably the best in the nation. Loads of the people at ESPN went through Newhouse; its basically an ESPN-producing factory.

UC Bekeley actually rates pretty good for journalism. So, any of them are great options.

Thanks for the advice so far. Also, should I put any weight on the fact that USC and Berkeley are two year programs vs. Syracuse being a one year program?

It could be a factor. But Syracuse may cover more? I know of MFA programs in journalism that are three programs. Where would you rather live? If it was me, I would choose USC because of location. I think Berkeley has the strongest program though. Newhouse is known more for undergraduate.

I don't have a strong preference in terms of where I live. I actually went to Berkeley undergrad and have pretty much lived around the Bay Area most of my life. So I don't necessarily have an opinion of Syracuse or USC as a location. One of the reasons USC appeals to me is because it's in the middle of a major media market. However, Berkeley is not too far away from San Francisco and Syracuse is a few hours from the city. So I guess I'm just looking for the school that could best prepare me for a career, as well as plug me into the industry once I graduate.

I think USC may be a good option. USC has very strong ties with the journalism world.

Please disregard my earlier post; I misread the initial post and thought that calikid was looking for an undergraduate program. I'm really not in a position to comment on any graduate programs at the universities listed, as I don't know too much about them.

Yeah, Syracuse has a great program. But it is better for undergrad.

I feel USC will definitely get you farther considering its location and if you plan on staying in LA upon graduation. Annenberg + Trojan Network?

Thanks for the replies so far everyone! Do any of you have thoughts on the cost associated with potentially choosing a school like USC or Syracuse over Berkeley? Worth the extra $25-$30k/year? I know it shouldn't matter if I'm set on a school, but it does seem like a lot.

Did you see what aid they gave you? It really may not be worth it at all for the other two. 25k-30k is a lot and Berkeley is higher ranked too, but I think USC will get you more internships/connections. It will look better to have Berkeley on your resume though. I think you have to figure out the costs for everything.
